Firefighter Diver Demonstration This Morning At Twin Lakes Recreation Area, Palatine

This morning there will be many fire department vehicles and dive/rescue vehicles and equipment at Twin Lakes Recreation Area, just northwest of the Route 53/Northwest Highway interchange. The regional water rescue team from Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) Division 1 will be conducting a demonstration of water rescue capabilities for the Division's command officers. The event will be held at Twin Lakes Recreation Area, 1200 E. Twin Lakes Drive in Palatine and will begin at 9:30 a.m. It will include demonstrations of dive rescue and recovery operations using both surface- supplied and self-contained underwater breathing apparatus and hard-line communications equipment, demonstration of high-resolution sector scan sonar to more quickly and safely search a target area, and use of this equipment in conjunction with a diver for a recovery operation. There will be a demonstration of a remotely- operated vehicle designed for search and recovery operations where conditions are too hazardous to deploy a diver. There will also be demonstrations of specialized tactics and equipment used in ice rescue and swiftwater / flood rescue situations, and of boat operations used in support of any of the previously mentioned missions. The support assets necessary for safe, efficient responses will also be shown.

MABAS is a statewide mutual aid system of fire departments throughout Illinois. Division 1 was the first division to be organized, and has been providing local fire departments with access to an organized response of trained personnel and equipment for over 40 years. Member departments can get immediate assistance for major fire and medical incidents as well as water rescue, technical rescue and hazardous materials incidents through this system. MABAS Division 1 is comprised of fire departments from Arlington Heights, Des Plaines, Elk Grove Township, Elk Grove Village, Hoffman Estates, Mount Prospect, Palatine, Palatine Rural, Rolling Meadows, Schaumburg, Streamwood and Wheeling.
