ALS or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is also called Lou Gehrig's disease in the United States -- a degenerative disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. ALS is a debilitating disease with varied symptoms characterized by rapidly progressive weakness, wasting away of muscle, twitching and involuntary muscle contractions, difficulty speaking, difficulty swallowing, and difficulty breathing.

ALS is not contagious and in 95% of cases ALS is not genetic and does not have a cause. Unfortunately, a cure has not yet been found for the disease. Most people with ALS die from respiratory failure within three to five years from the onset of symptoms. The median survival time from onset to death is around 39 months, and only 4% survive longer than 10 years.

Physicist and author Stephen Hawking has lived with the disease for more than 50 years, though his case is unusual.
