Arlington Heights Firefighters Bring Holiday Feasts To 12 Families On Christmas Eve

Arlington Heights firefighters were caught in the act of a good deed Christmas Eve at the Jewel-Osco, 1860 South Arlington Heights Road gathering food for 12 needy families.

As in other years, each firefighter donated money out of their own pockets to fund the annual program. In a similar grateful response, families this year greeted firefighters with hugs and homemade Christmas cookies to show their great appreciation for the meals. As one resident told firefighters, "We could never have done this without you. We can't tell you how much this means to us."

"This is a great annual tradition," said Deputy Chief Pete Ahlman. "It is one more way we can show we care and serve residents of Arlington Heights."

For the past 20 years, the Arlington Heights Fire Department has delivered deluxe Christmas meals to 12 needy families. If it weren't for the generosity of the local firefighters, these families could not have celebrated with a holiday feast.

Including the Arlington Heights firefighters' actions, the Cardinal is honored to have documented three charitable acts by police and firefighters this season. Awareness of two of the acts were made possible by tips from Arlington Heights residents. Last Saturday we were fortunate to catch sight of the Operation Santa police escort traveling down Palatine, then received a tip of the Arlington Heights destination of the Operation Santa stop in their weekend-long effort. We were also fortunate to cover the Arlington Heights police officers' Shop with a Cop event at Target this year. Then we received a tip of the firefighers' actions at the Jewel-Osco on the south side of Arlington Heights.

Woman Who Reported She Was Stabbed In Forest Preserve Charged With Felony: Filing A False Police Report

A 33-year-old Des Plaines woman was charged with filing a false police report in connection with an incident that occurred in a Forest Preserve area near Palatine, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said today.
On Nov. 29, Veronica Klicka reported that she was stabbed by an unknown offender while walking along a trail in the Deer Grove East Forest Preserve area. She had an apparent stab wound and was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

During the course of their investigation, Sheriff's Police detectives learned that she had injured herself with a knife. She fabricated that someone had stabbed her because she believed she was not supposed to be in possession of any weapons because she is on court-ordered supervision for DUI.
Klicka was arrested on Dec. 5 and charged with disorderly conduct – false report of an offense, a class 4 felony. She received an I-bond (own recognizance) during a Dec. 6 bond hearing at the George N. Leighton Criminal Courts Building at 26th Street and California.

Sheriff Dart reminds the public that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the government in a court of law.

Arlington Heights Police, Ftc Warn Of Utility Bill Scams That Ask For Payment Via Greendot, Paypal, Prepaid Gift Cards

Arlington Heights Police Department reported two businesses scammed by fraudulent offenders claiming to be calling from ComEd and calling to collect past due bills. Whether this is an alarming new trend in our area, or the fraud being reported more, the scammers are finding some success targeting businesses.

The offenders have used fraud involving Green Dot Money Pak, but additionally have also asked for Reloadit or Paypal cards for payment. These scams work because they prey upon human emotion.

The lists below outline how the scammer operates, how to prevent becoming a victim and what do to after the call is received.

The Scam
Scammer calls pretending to be from ComEd, the IRS, or with an official with the county or police department.

Scammer tells victims that that they owe money for overdue electric bills, past due taxes, or fines and fees

Scammer tells victims that they can make immediate payment via Green Dot Money Pak Card, a Reloadit card, or a PayPal card.

Prevent Becoming a Victim

Hang up once you detect a scam -- regardless of what number is on the caller ID. Scammers can use a digital technology trick known as Caller ID Spoofing to cause the victim's caller ID display to read a false number. The scammer could even cause the caller ID display to show "ComEd" and one of any of ComEd telephone numbers. Caller ID spoofing is illegal, but it can be done from outside of the United States -- making it difficult or impossible to prosecute.

Never provide payment over the phone with a Green Dot Money Pak Card, a Reloadit card, or a PayPal card; or through a wire transfer.

Following a Suspicious Call

If you are worried that you have a debt, call ComEd, the IRS or the courthouse, etc with a telephone number you find yourself. Never call a number that someone else provides you, and be careful when obtaining a phone number from the Internet that obtain the phone number from the official website for the actual agency.

Never provide payment over the phone with a Green Dot Money Pak Card, a Reloadit card, or a PayPal card; or through a wire transfer.

Other scams, such as the Grandparent scam, operate with similar utilization of Green Dot or Money Pak, etc. In the Grandparent scam, offenders call potential victims, and might claim that they are the police, and that the victim's grandson needs money for bail.

It may seem foolish on the part of the victim that these scams can occur, but there are times when victim's are overloaded with work, sick or fatigued, and possibly met with a coincidence that seems believable that causes a slip of security.

What to do if you have been scammed:

Call the police immediately to report the incident. Depending on the type scam, you may need to put a freeze on accounts or get new accounts. However, offenders that scam with Green Dot usually immediately withdraw money before victims have a chance to realize they might have been scammed.

The FTC has been warning about scams involving GreenDot, PayPal and prepaid cards at least since September 2013.

Dog Killed In Early Morning House Fire On Deerpath Rd, Just South Of Lake Cook Rd In Unincorporated Barrington Near Palatine

Palatine firefighter/paramedics and Cook County Sheriff's Police responded about 1:29 AM Wednesday to a report of a kitchen fire at a house at 115 S Deerpath Road Palatine, IL. The first Palatine Fire Department crews arrived on the scene at 1:37 a.m. and reported smoke showing from the rear of the one-story, single family residence. The
first fire companies pulled a hose line and aggressively attacked the fire that was determined to be in the basement of the house, while other firefighters pulled a second hose line to the first floor. Still other firefighters searched the smoke-charged house for any trapped occupants. Other crews provided ventilation and medical coverage. Due to the location of the house in an area without fire hydrants, firefighters stretched a supply line to Lake Cook Road, where a portable water tank was set up to provide a water supply. The source of the water was at Lake Cook Road ad Quentin Road. This tank was kept full by tanker trucks that shuttled water from a hydrant approximately a mile away.

Firefighters had to open numerous walls and ceilings to expose the fire for extinguishment. The fire was declared under control at 1:58 a.m. Firefighters continued to ventilate smoke and gases and perform salvage and overhaul
activities for some time after that.

No civilians or firefighters were injured in the fire, but one dog succumbed to the smoke.

The fire left the home uninhabitable, displacing four occupants. Damage estimates are not available at the time of this
release, and the fire remains under investigation by Palatine Fire Department investigators.

The fire was fought by 33 firefighters, staffing three engines, two ladder trucks, one rescue squad, three ambulances and four water tender (tanker) trucks, which responded to the scene along with three command officers and two Fire Investigators. This area is part of the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District, and is served by the Palatine Fire Department under a contractual agreement. Along with the Palatine and Palatine Rural units, crews from the Lake Zurich and Long Grove Fire Departments were among the initial responders to the scene as part of an automatic aid agreement.

Water tenders or tankers from the Barrington Countryside and Prospect Heights Fire Districts also responded upon confirmation of a working fire. Long Grove firefighters also responded with a water tanker.

Cook County Sheriff's Police officers assisted at the scene with traffic and crowd control.

The Palatine Fire Department reminds everyone to have working smoke detectors in their homes, whether a single-family dwelling, an apartment or a condo. Have an escape plan, practice it, and be prepared to use it in
the event of any fire.
