Arlington Heights Man's Life Saved By Bystander/Rescue Cpr And Paramedics At South Middle School After Collapsing While Playing Basketball

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 7:04 PM Thursday to South Middle School, 400 South Highland Avenue Arlington Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a call that a man collapsed in the gymnasium -- reported by bystanders as a possible heart attack.

Initially bystanders thought the man was breathing, but then began CPR when no breathing or pulse was detected. The man, reported to be about 70-years-old, was playing basketball in the South Middle School Gym when he collapsed.

Firefighter/paramedics from Rescue Ambulance 1 and Squad 1 requested an extra crew for a possible working cardiac arrest call with witnessed collapse while they were en route to South Middle School at about 7:06 p.m.

Witnesses reported a defibrillator was used, and the man was transported with Advanced Life Support in Rescue Ambulance 1 to Northwest Community Hospital. The man's life was saved by actions of bystanders and paramedic crews, and has since received additional medical treatment.
