Gas Main Break And Leak Causes House Explosion On West 107th Place, Chicago -- Neighborhood Evacuated

Chicago police and firefighters responded about 9:35 AM Tuesday to a report of a gas leak at 2148 W 107th Place Chicago , IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that City Water Department crews severed a medium pressure gas line.

There was a resulting fire under a furnace at a house on the block, which was immediately extinguished by Engine 120's crew.

Minutes later firefighters were standing by with a hose line while other crews worked to stop the leak.

At about 9:30 a.m. a house exploded and became fully-involved with fire.

Chicago Fire Department elevated the Hazmat Level 1 to a Hazmat Level 2 and have elevated the fire alarm to a Still and Box and to a 2-11 alarm fire.

At least one block of homes in all directions from the affected block are being evacuated. And firefighters are breaking into unoccupied homes to meter the homes and ventilate if necessary.
