Preliminary Damage Survey Results from Sunday's Lake County, IL Tornado Indicates Maximum at EF-1 Intensity

The NWS Chicago survey team investigating tornado damage in Lake County IL today from the severe thunderstorms on Sunday evening has some preliminary findings from the Round Lake into Hainsville and Grayslake area. The tornado touched down near Round Lake and produced damage of maximum EF-1 intensity along its path into Grayslake, with estimated wind speeds up to 90 to 100 mph.
The team will continue to investigate additional damage in Lake County this afternoon and we will provide updates on these findings, that will include path length and width and start end time(s).
EF Scale: the Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories:
EF0: Weak: 65 to 85 mph
EF1: Weak: 86 to 110 mph
EF2: Strong: 111 to 135 mph
EF3: Strong: 136 to 165 mph
EF4: Violent: 166 to 200 mph
EF5: Violent: > 200 mph
