Theft of Check from Mail on East Crabtree Drive Near Waverly Drive, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police received a report about 8:01 AM Wednesday of mail theft in the block of 1800 East Crabtree Drive Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that an unknown offender or offenders unlawfully took a check from the victim's mailbox. The check was later deposited fraudulently.

The crime is reported to have occurred on Wednesday, January 29, 2020 at 8:00 AM.

Initially it was unknown how the exact time was known, but the number of offender(s) was unknown.

Last Fall a victim also reported to Arlington Heights police that a new credit card was stolen at some point in his mail delivery service at home on the north side of Arlington Heights. Initially, it was not clear whether his credit card was stolen at a postal office, or on the streets, or at his mail box; but he had reason to believe his mail was stolen before it reached his physical mail box. He notified the USPS, and later the Arlington Heights Police Department.

The credit card that never made it to his physical mail box was used repeatedly in the south suburbs and was soon near the credit limit. However, the customer wasn't initially aware of the fraudulent activity. Someone even made a payment on his credit card.

The customer was initially doing some investigation on his own, because he was a subscriber of USPS Informed Delivery, which is a service that provides early morning emails with images of each envelope that is scheduled to arrive in the customer's physical mail box. The image of the envelope with the credit card was attached in a morning email, but the actual envelope never made it to his physical mail box. This is why he reported the missing mail to the USPS office.

He had retrieved the mail that day immediately after it was delivered, but the credit card was not included in the delivery.

When he called the credit card company is when he learned that his new credit card was near the credit limit and that someone had made a payment on the balance. The credit card company closed the credit card account and told the customer to contact the police. Very strange.

The United States Postal Inspection Service was investigating the case, but the outcome was not known.
