Palatine Fire Department: “Keep The Wreath Red” White Light Represents "Holiday-Related Fire"

The Palatine Fire Department will again be participating in the annual "Keep the Wreath Red" holiday safety program. This public-safety campaign was started in the mid 50's to increase fire safety awareness during the holidays.

Between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day, on each of our five (5) firehouses, a wreath will be decorated only in red lights. In the event of a "holiday related fire," we will exchange a red bulb with a white bulb. We hope, as you pass the wreaths you will consider potential fire safety problems in your home and take the time to correct them.

• Check all holiday lighting for wear or damaged wiring and replace as needed.

• Use indoor/outdoor lighting and extension cords where they are intended.

• Do not run lighting or extension cords through windows, doors or across sidewalks.

• Do not overload electrical cords. If it is hot, it is overloaded!

• Turn off all holiday lighting prior to leaving or going to bed.

• If displaying a live tree, use a sturdy tree stand and water the tree often.

• Keep the tree, wreaths and all holiday decorations away from any heat source; such as fireplaces, space heaters, candles and heating ducts.

• Make sure smoke detectors are tested and in good working order with fresh batteries.

• Use only sturdy candle holders and only place on firm, uncluttered surfaces.

• Do not place candles in windows near blinds and curtains.

• Have fireplaces and wood-burning stoves cleaned regularly.

All of the members of the Palatine Fire Department wish you a safe and happy holiday season.

Car Fire On Lift In A Repair Shop On Wise Rd Near Wright Blvd, Schaumburg

Schaumburg police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 12:35 PM Wednesday to a report of a car fire in a car repair shop  First fire crews reported smoke showing out the overhead door from a car fire in a repair shop. Firefighters fought a car fire that ignited ceiling material and other contents in a car repair stall. Firefighters had some difficulty making progress with the fire, apparently because the car was up on a lift close to the ceiling. The heat and fire -- generated so close to the roof -- apparently put the steel truss roof at risk of collapse. No firefighters were allowed on the roof. The risk of collapse of the car off of the lift or the lift collapsing was also a factor in fighting the fire.

Firefighters put two lines on the fire, and then a third line with firefighting foam was deployed because burning gasoline was still coming out of the vehicle about 20 minutes after the fire was reported.

A box alarm for for change of company mutual aid was requested at about 12:52 p.m. At 12:55 p.m. the firefighting operation went defensive after bent steel beams at the roof were discovered. All firefighters were ordered out of the repair stall and firefighters were ordered to terminate an operation assigned to ventilate the roof at a skylight. Fire command also checked that all firefighters were accounted for.

the fire was extinguished at about 1:53 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Prep Hockey Club Raises $1,000 for Northwest Community Hospital's Gift-A-Mammogram Program

Arlington Heights, Ill. (Nov. 12,2012) - Can a group of high-energy, teenage athletes contribute to a charitable cause? The Prep Hockey Club says, “Yes!” With some parental assistance, the Club’s players raised $1,000 at their games in October, National Breast Cancer Awareness month. They chose to give the money to a local cause: Northwest Community Hospital’s Gift-A-Mammogram program.

Gift-A-Mammogram helps uninsured, low-income people in our community cover the cost of procedures to diagnose and treat breast cancer. Christine Masonick, NCH’s Breast Center manager, administers the program. She says, “I often talk to women who are desperate for help. Because of the generosity of donors like these players, I don’t have to turn them away. Through Gift-A-Mammogram, we come to the aid of about 100 patients each year.”

“Prep” is a combined hockey team representing Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Elk Grove and Prospect high schools. Field teams play in the North Central Division of the Illinois High School League, and most home games are held at West Meadows Ice Arena.  In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the players wore pink shoelaces throughout October. One of their fundraising activities was a “chuck a duck” raffle in which spectators purchased a chance to throw small rubber ducks onto the ice. The thrower whose duck landed closest to the center won the prize.

While it was all great fun, the club’s president, Todd Peterson, says teaching young people to give back to the community is something Prep Hockey takes quite seriously. Peterson says, “We want the kids to know there’s more to life than hockey. This is a great opportunity to develop responsible and caring young men and women.”

At their October games, Prep Hockey Club players raised the money for the program, which helps uninsured women obtain diagnostic tests and treatment for breast cancer.
