Teen Possessing Gun With Defaced Serial Number Arrested Near Cottonwood Ln And Linneman Rd, Mount Prospect

A Mount Prospect police investigated two male subjects about 12:52 AM Sunday near Cottonwood Lane and Linneman Road Mount Prospect, IL. The police officer recognized one of the subjects as a 17-year-old juvenile of Mount Prospect who is a self-admitted gang member. When the officer attempted to make contact with the subjects, they both ran away from the officer. A short time later, the 17-year-old juvenile was located in the area of Cottonwood Lane and Busse Road. A search of the juvenile resulted in the recovery of a semi-automatic handgun from the juvenile's pocket. The gun that was discovered with the serial number defaced.

"The arrest of this juvenile with a firearm is a prime example of the department's efforts to address the issue of gangs in the community. The alert and proactive actions of the officers in this case removed a gang member from the streets and very likely prevented a violent crime from occurring somewhere in the northwest suburbs."

The juvenile was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and transported to the Cook County Juvenile Detention Facility, and will appear in juvenile court.

The Mount Prospect Police Department reminds the public that criminal charges are not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
