Woman Shot by Police on Maple Pl After Shooting at Police and Threatening to Shoot at Passing Cars on I-90 Near Route 53, Schaumburg

Schaumburg police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 7:38 PM Saturday to a 9-1-1 text report of a woman with a gun at an apartment at 1700 Maple Place Schaumburg, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics responded to a 9-1-1 text message when a woman's roommate reported to police that her roommate was making suicidal statements and holding a handgun.

When police arrived, the woman's roommate came out of the building -- leaving the unit's front door open.

At some time Saturday night, police discovered that the woman was sitting and holding a pistol to her head when officers walked into the apartment unit, according to Schaumburg police.

Police officers immediately asked that the woman put the handgun down, but she refused and later pointed the weapon at police officers. On that action police exited her immediate area., according to police.

The woman responded by closing the front door of the apartment and refusing to drop the weapon, and refusing to come out of the apartment.

Schaumburg police officers called for additional backup, and activated a Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) Emergency Services Team response.

Some or all firefighter/paramedics had left the scene, but returned about 9:38 p.m.

Firefighter/paramedics were staged at Woodland Drive and Arbor Drive.

The woman refused to come out and shortly before midnight fired at least one shot out of her window at a NIPAS vehicle, according to police.

About 11:33 p.m. police requested that the Illinois State police shut down Interstate 90 because the woman threatened to shoot at passing cars on the tollway. The apartment building sits about 125 feet north of Interstate 90, just north of Woodland Drive in Schaumburg near Rolling Meadows, and just west of Route 53.

Arlington Heights police and Hoffman Estates police and possibly Rolling Meadows police assisted Illinois State Police in shutting down ramp access to Route 53, while Illinois State Police shut down the main line of tollway traffic in both directions between Route 53 and Roselle Road.

A second Schaumburg fire rescue ambulance was dispatched to the scene at 11:36 p.m.

The woman later came out of her unit and fired shots at NIPAS officers who were in the hallway. A NIPAS officer returned fire and struck the woman twice, according to police.

About 12:00 a.m. police notified Schaumburg firefighters that they needed a stair chair for one of the police members, who would be coming out -- apparently injured -- and would be removed by a stair chair.

Firefighters received a report that one of the police personnel were going to be removed from the apartment building, but they did not know the nature of the injuries.

As of 12:06 a.m. Sunday even firefighter/paramedics knew nothing about the exact nature of injuries of any victims inside the apartment unit. They only knew that an offender was injured and a police member was possibly injured. At 12:06 a.m. firefighters also learned that the injured offender would be removed first, before the apparently injured police member.

At about 12:16 a.m. firefighter/paramedics knew they were receiving a gunshot victim.

The female offender, age 31, was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries where she also remained under police guard, according to police.

At about 12:21 a.m. Schaumburg firefighter/paramedics were notified that they could be moved up for "non-injured" personnel.

There was no mention of the incident on the official social media account from the Village of Schaumburg even as late as Sunday at 10:00 a.m. The latest message during the time of the incident was a July 31 message that I-90 would be down to one lane in each direction near Roselle Road for paving on August 1. The shooting scene was also located about 300 feet east of Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center.

Last weekend an apparent DUI or impaired driver rammed parked vehicles on a parking deck in another area of this apartment complex. Five vehicles were engulfed in flames, but no injuries were reported in last weekend's incident.
