Arlington Heights Police K-9 Receives Donation for Bulletproof Vest from Animal Feeds and Needs, Fromm Family Pet Food

Arlington Heights Police Department K9 unit received a monetary donation to acquire a special canine bulletproof vest.

Yara, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, joined the Police Department in September 2015. Officer Jeff Tegtmeyer and Yara trained together at Vohne Liche in Denver, Indiana for five weeks creating a strong working partnership. Together, they patrol the community supporting a law enforcement and public relations mission.

Like police officers, K9 partners are equally susceptible to violence by the criminal element. In fact, a police working dog Web page details over 90 canines killed in the line of duty from gun or sharp force traumatic injury in the past 10-years (www.cpwda.com). Several bulletproof vest manufacturers recognized this threat and also produce a ballistic garment for police dogs.

Two companies teamed up to purchase a safety vest for K9 Yara. Animal Feeds and Needs, an Arlington Heights pet supply retailer, joined with dog food manufacturer Fromm Family Pet Food of Mequon, Wisconsin to fund this offer.

The Police Department ordered a custom fit vest that should be delivered in six weeks. The entire cost ($800) was covered by their generous donation.

Officer Tegtmeyer and Yara are pictured below with Animal Feeds and Needs owner Chuck Hume. Mr. Hume presented a check to Off. Tegtmeyer on behalf of the charitable venture. The Police Department greatly appreciates this act of community support.
