Village of Arlington Heights Warns Residents About Illegal Sky Lanterns

This time of year many celebrations are being planned - graduations, weddings, family reunions and other parties. When making your plans, please remember that the popular "sky lanterns," which look like a small air balloon and use a candle or other fuel to rise into the sky, are not allowed to be used in Illinois by the State Fire Marshal.

Once it is lit and airborne there is no control of where it may travel. Wind may force it back to the ground and blow hot air out of the sides. There is a risk of a fire if a flame drops onto a rooftop, trees or power lines before the flame is totally extinguished.

Because of the risk of fire using sky lanterns, the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office has banned the use of these devices in Illinois and has added sky lanterns to a list of prohibited items under the Fireworks Regulation Act. Any questions, please call the Arlington Heights Fire Department or Building Services.
