Apartment Fire in Bensenville Displaces 32; Careless Smoking Apparent Cause

Bensenville firefighter/paramedics and police responded about 8:59 AM Monday to an apartment fire at Brentwood Apartments, 630 East George Street Bensenville, IL . Firefighters reports smoke and fire showing from roof and rear side of the two-story apartment building on George Street.

One firefighter was injured and a dog and two cats were killed in the apartment fire that
was apparently caused by "careless smoking. The fire department response was elevated to a MABAS Box Alarm, and the fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes.

No civilian injuries were reported.

All 32 tenants of the Brentwood Apartments complex in Bensenville were displaced from their apartments which caused extensive damage throughout the building -- especially the east side of the building.

The son of a woman resident reported that his mom dropped a cigarette and thought the cigarette was extinguished, but the cigarette ignited something inside the apartment

Krzyminski said she's one of the lucky ones: She has renter's insurance and she can move in with either a daughter or sister who live nearby.

The American Red Cross responded to assist the displaced families. Brentwood apartment staff were also working to find empty units in nearby apartment buildings to provide temporary housing.
