Ten People Transported by Paramedics to Hospitals After Chemical Spill at Willy Wonka Candy Factory on Norwood Ave, Itasca

Itasca police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:23 AM Friday to a report of people becoming ill from a chemical spill at Willy Wonka candy factory, 1445 Norwood Ave Itasca, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that that a pipe burst with a chemical leak at 9:30 p.m. At least 3 patients feeling sick by 1:28 am. Employees were evacuating out of the building when firefighter/paramedics arrived.

Initially it was reported that the chemical spilled was Lithium Chloride (not confirmed). Lithium Chloride MSDS

There apparently was not any major hazmat cleanup at the plant, and clean up was followed up by plant maintenance. Fire command reported the employees were experiencing minor symptoms.

Itasca Fire Engine 66's crew requested two additional ambulances by 1:42 am.

The incident was upgraded to a General Alarm by 2:03 am with two extra ambulances requested from Arlington Heights and Elk Grove Village requested. Arlington Heights Ambulance 3 and Elk Grove Village Ambulance 10 responded the scene at the production factory. Some patients were transported to Alexian Brothers Medical Center.

A total of nine patients were transported to area hospitals by 3:00 am. One more patient was transported to a hospital by 3:09 am.

Additional patients may have been transported by personal car to hospitals.

The EMS Box Alarm was struck out at 3:25 am.
