Alert from Arlington Heights Police Regarding Two Scams
Arlington Heights today alerted residents of two scams that were attempted recently against two residents in Arlington Heights.
(#1) A complainant has been receiving numerous suspicious telephone calls since her husband passed away. Typically, the caller tells her she has either won money or a fabulous trip but needs to send money or provide bank information to process the claim. During the last call the offender asked if she lived alone and how much money she had in her bank account. He eventually asked her to send $100 to a subject with a California address. The complainant’s daughter called the number given by the offender. She spoke to a subject who gave multiple names. When told not to call anymore the offender threatened to shoot her. The number provided is out of Jamaica.
(#2) The complainant received several suspicious telephone calls from a foreign sounding caller telling her she has won 3.5 million dollars. She was told documents needed to be signed and money wired to an account before the claim could be processed. She immediately hung up the phone. The number provided is out of Jamaica.
BEWARE of these common scams. Offenders will play on human emotion: Winning the big prize, getting the best deal, helping out a relative in need are just a few. RED FLAGS: Asking you to WIRE TRANSFER money or requesting BANKING INFORMATION. JUST HANG UP! Remember – The longer you stay on the line the more likely you are to be scammed.
