A Winter Storm Warning With 0.1 Inch Of Snow At 6:30 P.m. Thursday At O'hare?

The longest streak of days without snow at Chicago's official weather station at O'Hare International Airport ended at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The streak of 290 consecutive days without snow ended after breaking the record of 280 days that was set in 1994.

The year 2012 also recorded the latest date for measurable snow -- December 20, 2012. The previous record was December 16, 2012.

In Arlington Heights, as of midnight, there was no snow accumulated on pavement. Grassy areas shows a dusting of snow -- barely 0.1 inch. While high winds damaged some power lines and trees, this was a Winter Storm Warning for a storm that brought little or no snow to the northwest suburbs near Arlington Heights.

The real snow fell in central Wisconsin.

The comma shaped storm was half way across the area with no snow falling and temperatures well above freezing.

The area still has about a 20% chance of getting 0.1 inch of snow by 6:00 a.m. There's essentially no chance there will be three inches of snow on the ground by 6:00 a.m. Friday. The sun should be shining at daybreak and for the rest of the daylight hours Friday.

Here was The Cardinal -- Arlingtoncardinal forecast at 4:26 a.m. Thursday ...

"Snow amounts are likely to be less than 3 inches in Arlington Heights. Much of the rationale for this particular Winter Storm WARNING in Arlington Heights is the forecast for high winds associated with the snowfall."

Dui Crash Involving A School Bus At Wilke Road And Grove Street, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 3:41 PM Tuesday to a crash involving a school bus and two other vehicles at Wilke Road and Grove Street A Bluebird school bus was northbound on Wilke Road in the inside lane. The driver of a 2003 Chevy Avalanche turned left in front of the school bus while attempting to go westbound on Grove Street. The bus was unable to stop and struck the side of the Chevy Avalanche. The Avalanche then struck a 2001 Plymouth Neon, which was eastbound Grove Street from Rolling Meadows waiting to turn onto Wilke Road. The bus had 41 student passengers between the ages of 5 and 12. There were only minor injuries.

Police officers at the scene spoke with the driver of the Chevy Avalanche, John D.Schuster, 48-years-old, and smelled the odor consistent with alcoholic beverage coming from his breath. He was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. He was transported to NWCH for precautionary measures. A flask containing an alcoholic beverage was found in the vehicle. Schuster posted cash and a valid driver's license before being released.

Schuster, of the 500 block of South Reuter Drive, was also charged with illegal transportation of liquor, failure to yield while turning left, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The crash is one of three crashes involving school buses with injuries to children this month in the area. Wednesday a crash on the Tri-State Tollway near Deerfield Road injured children on a school bus, and Tuesday three children were injured on a school bus that crashed with a pickup truck at North Frontage Road and Bayside Drive in unincorporated Palatine.

Snow And Ice Life Or Death Winter Driving Tips -- Or At Least Accident Prevention Tips

The Indiana Department of Transportation knows snow. Every year Northwest Indiana gets hit by additional Lake Effect Snow from strong northwest winds after the main snow storms hit. Here is information adapted from the Indiana Department of Transportation and other sources for all drivers in Winter weather.

BEFORE THE TRIP

Knowledge: Before leaving home, find out about the driving conditions, and be aware of the weather forecast to help you with making driving decisions. Safe drivers know the weather, and their limits. If the weather is bad remember, Ice and Snow, Take it Slow, or just don't go.

Clear: Remove any snow on your vehicle's windows, lights, brake lights and signals. Make sure you can see and be seen. As Sergeant Scott Kristiansen, of the Buffalo Grove Police Department says, "Don't be a peephole driver." Peephole drivers can't see hazards on the road because their field of vision is limited. Peephole drivers often drive up on median curbs at intersections because they can't see them while their turning. Of course, peephole drivers can't see cross traffic as well as they should.

Inspect: Check your vehicle's tires, wiper blades, fluids, lights, belts and hoses. A breakdown is bad on a good day and dangerous on a bad-weather day.

Time: Leave plenty of time to reach your destination safely. It's not worth putting yourself and others in a dangerous situation just to be on time.

Inventory: Keep your gas tank at least half full. Especially if you are traveling a distance through rural areas, carry a winter driving kit that should include blankets, flashlight, extra batteries, a brightly colored cloth, sand (or cat litter), shovel, candle, matches, non-perishable high calorie food (energy bars that aren't hard as a rock when cold), first aid kit, and jumper cables

CAUTION: SLIPPERY WHEN WET OR ICY

There's nothing worse than a first time snow when driver's tend to forget to slow down and take extra care while driving.

First Snow or Ice: Drivers often aren't prepared for winter driving and forget to take it slow. Remember to drive well below the posted speed limit and leave plenty of room between cars.

Black Ice: Roads that seem dry may actually be slippery – and dangerous. Take it slow when approaching intersections, off-ramps, bridges or shady areas – all are common spots for black ice. Remember, Ice and Snow, Take it Slow.

Limited Visibility: Stay attentive and reduce speed. Know what's going on around you.

Four-Wheel Drive: Especially on expressway, four-wheel drive vehicles can lose control just easily as a car at higher speeds, and their more likely to roll over. Many SUVs are found in ditches on snowy days. On snow and ice, go slowly, no matter what type of vehicle you drive. Even if you have an SUV with four-wheel drive you may not be able to stop any faster, or maintain control any better, once you lose traction. Four-wheel drive may get you going faster from a stop, but it won't help you stop sooner.

STAY SAFE AROUND SNOW PLOWS

Snow plows are out on the roads before, during and after the storm. Keep your distance from snow plows and watch out for other motorists that maneuver carelessly around snow plows.

Distance: Give snowplows room to work. The plows are wide and can cross the centerline or shoulder. Don't tailgate and try not to pass. If you must pass, take extreme caution and beware of the snow cloud.

Speed: Snowplows travel below the posted speed limit. Be patient. Allow plenty of time to slow down. Remember, Ice and Snow, Take it Slow. Collision with snow plows are obviously likely to cause serious injuries.

Vision: A snowplow operator's field of vision is restricted. You may see them, but they don't always see you. Keep your distance and watch for sudden stops or turns.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION

Speed: The faster you're going, the longer it will take to stop. When accelerating on snow or ice, take it slow to avoid slipping or sliding. Ice and Snow, Take it Slow.

Distance: Give yourself space. It takes extra time and extra distance to bring your car to a stop on slick and snowy roads. Leave extra room between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Brake: Brake early, brake slowly, brake correctly and never slam on the brakes. If you have anti-lock brakes, press the pedal down firmly and hold it. If you don't have anti-lock brakes, gently pump the pedal. Either way, give yourself plenty of room to stop.

If you've never felt your ABS system activate it could startle you. [When your ABS system brakes activate] you should feel a rapid "pulsing" in the pedal and might hear what sounds like a grinding noise. It almost seems like the brakes are not working properly and can surprise you if you're not expecting it. When using anti-lock braking, never let off the brake pedal and make sure to apply constant pressure until you stop.

-- Sergeant Scott Kristiansen, Buffalo Grove Police Department

Control: When driving on ice and snow, do not use cruise control and avoid abrupt steering maneuvers. When merging into traffic, take it slow. Sudden movements can cause your vehicle to slide.

Snow, ice, slush or even rain can cause wheel-spin and loss of control. The cruise control in you car or truck is designed for normal road conditions. It doesn't know when the pavement is slippery. Under slick conditions, you need to be in complete control and continuously monitoring road conditions. When your tires hit a slick spot and lose contact with the roadway your cruise control is not able to adequately sense the roadway conditions. An activated cruise control system will continue to apply power, keeping the wheels spinning. When the tires make contact with firm road again, the car can skid or lose control.

-- Sergeant Scott Kristiansen, Buffalo Grove Police Department

Vision: Be aware of what's going on well ahead of you. Actions by other vehicles will alert you to problems more quickly, and give you that split-second of extra time to react safely.

AFTER A CRASH

Especially in Winter conditions, a crash can be followed by a second crash or multiple crashes. If it is safe to stay in your vehicle, it is best to stay in your vehicle, call 9-1-1 and wait for rescuers to shut down the road or protect the crash scene. Many people that get out of their vehicles have been struck and killed by other vehicles that either lose control or have a second crash while passing the first crash. Operators at 9-1-1 centers appreciate getting information from a vehicle occupant that has actually been involved in the crash for more accurate information about the crash and surrounding conditions. It is much easier for them to hear callers when they are inside the vehicle, rather than outside with high wind noise whipping across the cell phone microphone.

IF YOUR STRANDED WITH NO IMMEDIATE HELP

Don't leave your car. It's the best protection you have.

Tie a brightly colored cloth to your antenna.

Roll down your window a small amount to allow fresh air in your vehicle and prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Keep the exhaust pipe free of blockage from snow or other material to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

Don't panic. An idling car uses approximately one gallon of gas per hour.

Arlington Heights Police: Idot’s Christmas & New Year’s Holiday Enforcement Campaign Now Through January 1, 2013

The Arlington Heights Police Department is conducting traffic enforcement efforts through a Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Grant awarded to the Village by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Division of Traffic Safety. The purpose of the grant is to reduce personal injury and fatal traffic accidents through increased traffic enforcement efforts. The grant supplements current law enforcement activities relating to traffic safety over a one-year period for various different enforcement campaigns designated by IDOT. The campaigns coincide with selected holiday periods in which there is a documented increase of traffic-related crashes and injuries.

The Department will commence traffic enforcement activities relating to IDOT's Christmas & New Year's Holiday Enforcement Campaign now through January 1, 2013. Enforcement activities will include numerous impaired driving saturation patrols. Officers working these patrols will attempt to identify and cite motorists who choose to drive while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, without using their safety belts, or are committing other traffic-related offenses including but not limited to equipment, registration, driver's license, and insurance violations.

Updated Info: Palatine Apartment Fire On Long Valley Drive, Unincorporated Palatine

Palatine Fire Department responded about 11:01 a.m. Monday, December 17, 2012 to a report of a fire in the area of Long Valley Drive and Rand Road in unincorporated Palatine.

Numerous calls reporting the fire were received from passers-by. The fire was determined to be located at 1213 Long Valley Drive in the Long Valley Apartments complex. The first Palatine Fire Department crews arrived on the scene and reported smoke showing from a ground floor apartment in the 3-story, 6-unit apartment building. The first fire companies attacked the fire with a 1 3⁄4" hose line from the exterior to knock down the main body of fire, then forced entry into the affected unit, where they encountered a considerable amount of smoke and heat throughout the unit. At the same time, other firefighters removed a resident from a third-floor apartment, assisting her down the interior stairs. Other firefighters searched the building for additional occupants and for fire extension, laddered the building, provided for a water supply from a hydrant, stretched a second hose line, and provided for emergency medical coverage. The fire was declared under control at 11:17 a.m. Firefighters continued to ventilate smoke and perform salvage and overhaul activities. The fire was determined to be confined to the apartment of origin.

No one was home in the fire unit at the time of the fire. Palatine Police officers assisted with evacuating the building, and also with traffic and crowd control. Cook County Sheriff's Police also assisted with crowd control at the scene. Three civilians were assessed on the scene for possible smoke inhalation; all refused further medical care or transportation. No firefighters were injured during this incident.

The fire was fought by 24 firefighters, staffing three engines, two ladder trucks, one rescue squad and four ambulances which responded to the scene along with five command officers. One engine from Arlington Heights and one ambulance from Buffalo Grove responded to the scene, and an ambulance from the Long Grove Fire Protection District responded to cover a Palatine fire station under automatic and mutual aid agreements. Two fire investigators also responded to the scene. The complex where the fire occurred is in unincorporated Palatine Township and part of the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District. It is covered by the Village of Palatine Fire Department under a contractual agreement.

The apartment where the fire originated suffered significant fire, smoke and heat damage and was not tenable for the occupants. The remaining units of the building sustained no damage. At the time of this release, the cause of the fire remains under investigation and damage estimates are not yet available.

The Palatine Fire Department reminds everyone to have working smoke detectors in their homes. If you notice a fire or smoke in your home or apartment, get out immediately.

Natvity Scene And Free Speech Celebrated At North School Park, Arlington Heights

A group of Christians and supporters of a Nativity Scene in a public park celebrated the opening of the Nativity Scene, as a symbol of the Gospel of the New Testament on Saturday, December 15, 2012 about 1:00 p.m.

Atheist Rob Sherman also celebrated the proper negotiations with the government for agreement about the display, the proper recognition of the First Amendment , and the example set here in Arlington Heights that Christians and atheists can be friends despite "theological differences." He complimented the display with its proper notice by the Arlington Heights Park District and the separation of the religious display from the secular displays at the park.

Rev. Bill Zavaski, pastor of Saint James Catholic Church in Arlington Heights blessed the celebration of Jesus Christ represented by the Nativity Scene located on the northwest corner of North School Park. Rev. Bill Zavaski also prayed for those suffering from the Newtown CT mass shooting, and led the Lord's Prayer.

Rev. Calvin Lindstrom, of Christian Liberty Academy, also provided an introduction to the celebration.

Jim Finnegan, a former Arlington Heights resident and chairman of the Illinois Nativity Scene Committee, recognized supporters of the presentation, including Tom Brejcha, Thomas More Society President and founder. Brejcha explained that private speech in a public forum is permissible because the government-owned property is held in trust by the people. Brejcha also thanked the Arlington Heights Park District Board.
