Natvity Scene And Free Speech Celebrated At North School Park, Arlington Heights

A group of Christians and supporters of a Nativity Scene in a public park celebrated the opening of the Nativity Scene, as a symbol of the Gospel of the New Testament on Saturday, December 15, 2012 about 1:00 p.m.

Atheist Rob Sherman also celebrated the proper negotiations with the government for agreement about the display, the proper recognition of the First Amendment , and the example set here in Arlington Heights that Christians and atheists can be friends despite "theological differences." He complimented the display with its proper notice by the Arlington Heights Park District and the separation of the religious display from the secular displays at the park.

Rev. Bill Zavaski, pastor of Saint James Catholic Church in Arlington Heights blessed the celebration of Jesus Christ represented by the Nativity Scene located on the northwest corner of North School Park. Rev. Bill Zavaski also prayed for those suffering from the Newtown CT mass shooting, and led the Lord's Prayer.

Rev. Calvin Lindstrom, of Christian Liberty Academy, also provided an introduction to the celebration.

Jim Finnegan, a former Arlington Heights resident and chairman of the Illinois Nativity Scene Committee, recognized supporters of the presentation, including Tom Brejcha, Thomas More Society President and founder. Brejcha explained that private speech in a public forum is permissible because the government-owned property is held in trust by the people. Brejcha also thanked the Arlington Heights Park District Board.
