"Idle Free Zone" Signs To Encourage Less Idling

7:01 AM Wednesday   With school back in full swing, many of us are dropping off and picking up children from school and other activities. At many drop-off and pick-up areas by schools, park facilities and the library, you may see an "Idle Free Zone" sign that's been installed in the parkway.

The Village recently completed the installation of "Idle Free Zone signs" as part of a new initiative, "Idle Free Arlington." that encourages drivers to consider idling their vehicles less while waiting in pick-up and drop-off areas, waiting in line at a drive-thru or waiting in traffic at a train crossing. Click here for more information on what you can do to idle less and of the positive benefits the result.

To further promote "Idle Free Arlington," the Village is running this video message on its cable access channels as a reminder that idling less leads to a healthier environment.

Throughout the Village drivers will see "Idle Free Zone" signs in areas where increased idling typically occurs. The signs increase awareness about idling and encourage drivers to consider turning off their vehicles to decrease idling. The Park District, Arlington Heights Memorial Library and the School Districts support the Village's initiative and have joined in a collaborative community effort to help fund the cost of the signage and to have signs installed on their property.

The Village's 2013 vehicle sticker features the "Idle Free" message and will further prompt drivers to consider idling their vehicles less. In working together, the Idle Free Arlington campaign can help improve air quality and help everyone "breathe easy."
