Taxi Cab Stolen After Cab Driver Stabbed By Passenger During Trip From Hoffman Estates Toward Rockford

Huntley police responded about 9:30 AM Thursday to a report of the stabbing of a cab driver and carjacking of his taxi  near Interstate 90 and Route 47. Police received a report that the cab driver was en route with a passenger/customer from an address in Hoffman Estates and heading to an address in Rockford, when the passenger asked the cab driver to pull into the north end of a parking lot at Huntley outlet mall. The driver was stabbed in the neck and pushed out of the cab. The offender then drove away in the cab. The cab -- a minivan -- was later found in abandoned in a parking lot near the intersectin of Locust Street and East Main Street in Rockford.

Illinois State Police had spotted the minivan about 10:00 a.m. and notified Rockford police that the vehicle was entering the city. Rockford police spotted the vehicle near State Street and Vale Avenue, but only engaged in a short pursuit because of heavy traffic, and the fact that the vehicle was being tracked with a GPS locator inside the minivan. The vehicle was located abandoned. The offender was not located. He was describe as a male/black wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and sweat pants.
