Hanover Park Man Killed On Elgin O'hare Expressway Near Gary Ave; Multiple Crashes Follow

Roselle Fire Department, Roselle police and Illinois State police responded about 10:15 PM Monday to a report of multiple crashes on the  Elgin O'Hare Expressway between Roselle Road and just west of Gary Avenue. Dhirajial Tejala Ratanpara, 42, of Hanover Park died after suffering critical injuries on the Elgin O'Hare Expressway near Gary Avenue. Ratanpara was struck while standing outside his wrecked car as additional crashes occurred on an icy expressway.

A police car slid into the scene further east of the fatal crash as several crashes occurred. that police car was either hit again or a second police car was hit on the expressway.

Late Monday night there was a report of about 15 vehicles involved in crashes on the Elgin O'Hare Expressway.

Police closed the expressway in both directions about 10:30 p.m. Schaumburg police closed all entrance ramps near the Village of Schaumburg while Elk Grove police and Itasca police worked to close the entrance to the main expressway near Rohlwing Road. An expressway parking lot built up while rescuers worked to help crash victims.

The first significant dusting of snow apparently caught salt trucks by surprise. IDOT salt trucks were requested to expedite to the scene, so the expressway could be re-opened. Radar indicated freezing precipitation headed toward the northwest suburbs earlier during the day.

Several crashes also occurred on Route 53 at Palatine Road, on Route 53 near Algonquin Road (northbound and southbound), Route 53 southbound near Woodfield Road, at multiple locations on the Tri-State and on I-290. Crashes were also reported on Route 59 near Lake Street and near West Bartlett Road.
