Stolen Auto, Not: False Alarm With Onstar Gives Driver A Big Police Surprise At Kensington Road And Northwest Highway, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police responded about 6:03 PM Wednesday to a report from OnStar of a stolen auto near Schoenbeck Road and Palatine Road Arlington Heights, IL Police received a report that OnStar was tracking a reported stolen vehicle on southbound Schoenbeck Road from Palatine Road. OnStar reported that a red 2013 GMC Arcadia was stolen and was being tracked. Police were updated as several police units converged in the direction of the track. Prospect Heights police and Mount Prospect police were also notified. The vehicle was eventually tracked to Dryden and Miner where it was spotted at about Dryden and Kensington. Police activated their emergency lights as the vehicle was westbound on Kensington Road and approaching Hickory Avenue. The vehicle stopped on westbound Kensington Road, just east of Northwest Highway.

The vehicle had dealer license plates. The driver was transported in custody to Arlington Heights Police Department headquarters, and the vehicle was towed to a police holding area. After investigation, it was determined that the driver legitimately possessed the vehicle. The vehicle and driver were released. Police were investigating whether OnStar was in error or whether the dealership was in error on this case.
