Suv Fire On Fourth Of July On Route 53 Near Palatine

Illinois State police and Palatine firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:00 PM Thursday to a report of an SUV fire on the shoulder of Route 53 near Palatine Road. . Police and firefighter/paramedics arrived to find a fully-involved SUV fire parked on the shoulder of the northbound lanes of Route 53, just south of Palatine Road.

An engine crew, truck crew and Battalion Chief responded to the fire and extinguished the fire in the green Jeep Cherokee in a routine short time -- by about 10:15 p.m.

The family in the vehicle escaped, and were huddled north of vehicle while standing on the shoulder. No injuries were reported.

Word spread among bystanders that firecrackers started the fire, but no fire crackers were involved in the vehicle fire.

Traffic was heavy in the area, as crowds at nearby fireworks displays were heading home.

Northbound Route 53 was reduced by one lane and drivers experienced delays. Northbound Wilke Road was also congested from Palatine Road back Northwest Highway at Arlington International.
