Village Board Talks Liquor Laws As 2013 Underage Violations Are Double The Number During 2011-2012

Village trustees are talking about BASSET training again. The Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training (BASSET) program is the state of Illinois' seller/server training program. The program is an educational and training tool to sellers/servers of alcoholic beverages to serve responsibly and stay within the law.

The BASSET Certification Program serves as a preventive measure to discourage over consumption and keep DUI drivers off the roads.

There is a little more urgency this time around because so far in 2013 there have been 10 underage liquor serving violation. The figure compares to only five violations for the two-year period 2011-2012.

Forty percent of the violations this year came from businesses with employees that received in-person Bassett training, as opposed to online certification.

Another potential problem might be caused by lack of training for clerks that might sell packaged alcohol. Under current ordinance, liquor stores require a manager to be BASSET-trained, but do not require that clerks are BASSET-trained.

A third alcohol-related issue discussed was the regulation of BYOB establishments in the Village of Arlington Heights. The possibility of the approval of a regulated beer and wine BYOB was discussed, but a decision was deferred to a later time.

Also deferred for a future meeting is the possibility of new code that would allow Walgreens and CVS stores to sell alcohol under the same category as grocery stores.
