Severe Weather Last Night Suspends Festivals At Schaumburg Septemberfest And Buffalo Grove Days
Severe thunderstorms passed through the northwest suburbs between 8:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. causing the suspension of activities at Buffalo Grove Days and Schaumburg's Septemberfest.
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued at about 8:36 p.m. Sunday for north central Cook County and northeast DuPage County. Thunderstorms approached from the north along a line from about the Lake Michigan lakefront in southeast Lake County to central Kane County.
The storms reached severe category just as they approached the northwest suburbs at about 8:35 a.m., but diminished to below severe category at about 9:00 p.m.
The storm also passed Buffalo Grove by about 9:00 p.m. Officials in Buffalo Grove re-opened Buffalo Grove Days at about 9:05 p.m. in time to continue with the event's scheduled fireworks display. No information was available about what Buffalo Grove officials used for shelter from the severe weather.
Schaumburg officials opened four shelters, which were used by about 1,000 people. One of the shelters was at the Prairie Center. By 9:45 p.m. the shelters were emptied after severe weather and rain left the area.
At the Schaumburg festival police searched the area to make sure the festival grounds were cleared and that no person was injured on the grounds.
No injuries were reported at either festival.
Unrelated to the festivals, a lightning strike at a townhouse condominium caused a small attic fire in the 1600 block of Partridge Court in Arlington Heights. Smoke was detected about 9:00 p.m. by residents. The fire was actually hidden in a small area that was not visible from inspection of the common attic area. The fire was then extinguished in a short time before it caused significant damage.
