Arlington Heights Victim: Computer Scammers Pretend They're From The U.S. Department of Justice
Arlington Heights police received a report about 2:56 PM Tuesday of a computer scam against a resident that lives in the block of 800 South Dwyer Avenue Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that an unknown offender or offenders attempted a computer fraud scam against an Arlington Heights resident.
A 70-year-old complainant was playing scrabble on her computer when a screen shot from the U.S. Department of Justice filled her monitor screen. She was unable to exit the screen or restart her computer. The message stated "All illegal activities have been recorded in the police database, including photos and videos from your camera for further identification. You have been registered by viewing pornography involving minors." The screen also stated the complainant needed to pay $300 due to the violation and could be criminally prosecuted. She was given 48 hrs to pay or "The Fight Against Cyber activity" would confiscate her computer. The screen shot advised she was being audio- and video-recorded even though she did not have a camera on her computer.
The crime is reported to have occurred between Monday, January 27, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. and Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 2:55 p.m.
There are several versions of this scam/virus schemes -- many claiming to come from the F.B.I. or other federal/state agency, or an online anti-virus company. Some scams include a referral to a virus removal company where you can make an immediate payment to protect your computer. In many cases the "virus removal company" actually puts more harmful programs on the victim's computer while they pay for a fake anti-virus program.
Users need to use reputable antivirus software with updated definitions that can be purchased from a store such as Best Buy, CDW or ABT. Otherwise users need to take the computer to a reputable computer repair company.

Winter Storm Warning Effective 9:00 Pm Tonight Until 6:00 Pm Saturday
Chicagoland weather radar shows an area of snow moving west to east along a line just north of Interstate 80 and approaching Joliet.
Snow is expected to gradually push north. The snow we are about to receive is not another of the Alberta Clippers that we have been hit with week after week. We're about to experience a good old-fashioned Low Pressure hook, which will mean heavy, wet snow, and ice and rain just to the south of the heavy snow line.
Snow is likely to start in Arlington Heights and the northwest suburbs some time between 6:00 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday with the heavier snow and faster accumulation after midnight. The forecast calls for about 2.3 inches by 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning and a final total of 6.5 inches by 6:00 p.m. Saturday. The approaching system could track further north, which could bring heavier snow to the northwest suburbs -- in the neighborhood of 6-8 inches. The shift would also bring a larger area of freezing rain and winter mix to the south and southwest suburbs of Chicago. Ice accumulation is expected to be less than one-half inch in the south suburbs.
Satellite images show that much of Illinois is under clouds, with the storm system clearly defined.
Mostly cloudy conditions are forecast to continue today and Saturday with clearing after 7:00 p.m. Saturday, along with a temperature drop -- 26 degree at 4:00 p.m. down to 4 degrees at 5:00 a.m. Sunday.
Wind gusts of 17-20 MPH from the north and northwest are forecast from 11:00 a.m. to midnight late Saturday.

Back-To-Back House Fire Calls On Imperial Ct And Elmwood Avenue Extinguished And Secured, Palatine Fire Department
Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 12:55 AM Friday to a report of a house fire in the block of 100 Imperial Lane Palatine, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of a house fire from neighbor's address. Police arrived first and confirmed a working fire and provided a corrected address.
Firefighters received several calls of a fire at the rear of a house, and discovered a fire involving a hot tub outside at the rear deck of the house. Firefighters had water on the fire by about 1:01 a.m. At first look it did not appear that the fire spread to the interior of the home, and within a few minutes firefighters confirmed that the fire did not extend into the house.
The fire was marked under control by about 1:07 a.m.
A second house fire call was received about 1:02 in the 200 block of South Elmwood Avenue in Palatine. A small heater "lit up" in a rear porch, but did not extend to the house or the porch. Some light smoke or haze was in the house, and firefighters worked on ventilating the house and securing the heater. Firefighters also checked carefully for extension into the home on Elmwood Avenue, and found no extension into the house.
Arlington Heights firefighters assisted Palatine firefighters at the Elmwood address. Firefighters were working on securing the heater by about 1:27 a.m.

Illinois Senate And House Of Representatives Pass House Bill 11 For Horse Racing Industry
Arlington International Racecourse found good news with the action taken today by the Illinois Senate and House of Representatives to pass legislation crucial to the survival of the Illinois Horse Racing industry. House Bill 11, which awaits the signature of Governor Pat Quinn, extends the ability of state residents to wager on horse races online via Advance Deposit Wagering (ADW) through Jan. 31, 2017. The current legislation allowing ADW was scheduled to sunset on Jan. 31, 2014.
"We hope the bill is sent to the Governor quickly so that he can sign it and preserve the more than 35,000 jobs in the state dependent on a full horse racing schedule in Illinois," said Arlington Park President Tony Petrillo. "With his signature many people can plan on going back to work knowing that there will be a full racing schedule in Illinois not only for 2014 but for the next several years as well."
The passage of HB 11 came about when all factions of the Illinois Horse Racing industry were able to agree on language that provides the necessary funding for the Illinois Racing Board to regulate a full slate of horseracing in 2014.
"We can now focus on maintaining unity and working to rebuild racing and create new opportunities that will bring more jobs and revenue to the State for the long term," Petrillo added.

Rumors were flying that Joe Caputo & Sons were interested in the Arlington Heights Dominick's store before the Dominick's store closed in December 2013. The Arlington Heights store is about 50,000 square feet. The Caputo family is active with sponsorships at St. Viator High School. The family opened the business in 1989 in Des Plaines.
Caputo's has the existing store in Des Plaines and a store in Algonquin, and as close as Palatine, but in recent years the drive west on Rand Road can be a slow trip.
Safeway, owners of Dominick's, announced in October that the company was exiting the Chicago market and that all Dominick's stores would close.
Three major grocery chains have bought or leased some of the 72 former Dominick's locations.
Chicagoland Dominck's Takeover Score:
Mariano's Fresh Markets 11
Jewel-Osco 4

Whole Foods may be in for 6 or 7 former Dominick's locations.

Stuck Railroad Gates Mean Hazards And Inconveniences For Arlington Heights Residents, Workers In Town
Arlington Heights police were aware 3:00 AM Monday of stuck Union Pacific railroad gates atl Arlington Heights Road and Northwest Highway Arlington Heights, IL. Train gates in the Arlington Heights were stuck in the down position again in downtown Arlington Heights early Monday morning, January 27, 2014.
The train gates are a subject of concern for at least some residents who must endure loud train horns in the middle of the night as trains pass through with train horns blasting while the gates are malfunctioning.
Motorist often sit for several minutes before they realize that no train is coming. Some go around the gates, and some eventually look for another way to get from one side of town to the other.
When the stuck gates occur, risks of accidents increase.
Frequent train gate malfunctions cause police work to be hampered by delays getting across town, or by police work time resources on assignments related to re-routing downtown traffic.
Metra/Union Pacific railroad gates were stuck in the down position about 3:30 a.m. Monday, January 27, 2014 at Arlington Heights Road and Evergreen Avenue. The railroad gates have malfunctioned numerous times in near-zero weather in recent weeks.
