House Fire On North Yale Ave, Near Maude Ave, Arlington Heights
Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 12:15 PM Tuesday to a report of a house fire in the block of 1600 North Yale Avenue Arlington Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics upgraded their response to a "working fire" response "Code 4" as dark smoke rolled from the roof gable and vent. Firefighters were able to secure a positive water supply quickly thanks to good maintenance of snow near hydrants in the neighborhood.
Firefighters found a fire in a bathroom and an attic. At one point smoke was getting very dark, and a little fire broke through the roof. Firefighters quickly knocked the fire, and was completely under control, including tight spaces in the attic within about 45 minutes.
Ironically, the neighborhood several years ago didn't have fire hydrants. Tanker trucks would have been required to haul water that is dumped into portable tanks in the street. Or long inline series of fire engines would have had to pump water from the nearest fire hydrants in Arlington Heights.
No injuries were reported. The first police officer on the scene helped evacuate residents that were in the house at the time the fire broke out.
Public works and firefighters applied "salt" or other treatment on the streets to prevent icing. Air temperature during firefighting and overhaul rose from about -2 degrees to plus 2 degrees with the wind chill ranging from about -21 to -16. Winds were west and southwest at about 14 mph -- driving smoke across Yale Avenue and feeding the fire with oxygen.
