Past PTA President At South Middle School Charged With Theft, Forgery, Arlington Heights

An Arlington Heights woman with several ties to the community was charged last week with stealing money from a local parent-teacher group, police said Tuesday.

Denise Hoppe had been PTA president of South Middle School starting May 2012. The alleged theft occurred in July 2013, but was not discovered until spring 2014 when a new PTA treasurer began work.

The PTA notified Arlington Heights police about the possible discrepancy on June 3, 2014, after Hoppe left her work as PTA president, according to court records.

Denise Hoppe, 48, was charged Thursday August 14, 2014 with theft and forgery. Both of the charges are felonies.

Hoppe is accused of depositing about $1,400 intended for the PTA into her bank account, according to court records and Cook County Assistant State's Attorney David Shin.

Allegedly, Hoppe also used a PTA check to write out a partial rent payment to her landlord and then forged his name when depositing the check into his bank account.

Hoppe had been working for the Arlington Heights Police Department and park district in a park counselor program where employees keep watch on various parks in the community. She's has been dismissed from ther position, which earned less than $25,000 as a part-time job.

According to the Village of Arlington Heights Treasurer's reports, Hoppe has been on village payroll at least since 2008.

A Linked-in profile for Denise Hoppe displays that she served as a Board of Directors Officer for Frontier Days from 2007 to 2009 -- working as Beer Coordinartor, ID Check Chairman and Parade Marshal.

Hoppe's bond was set at $50,000.
