VIDEO: Luxury Mansion Destroyed by Fire on Rolling Hills Dr, Barrington Hills
Police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:38 p.m. Saturday to a house fire at 24 Rolling Hills Drive. The neighborhood has no fire hydrants.
A neighbor reported that the residents that lived at the house -- believed to be renting the house -- were seen burning leaves in the yard. The burning leaves apparently ignited the exterior of the house. Winds at 2:51 p.m. were from the northeast at about 15 mph.
When firefighters arrived they began an aggressive interior attack, but the fire was too intense and too dangerous to continue with the interior attack. Firefighters switched to defensive mode.
The level of response was elevated to a 2nd Alarm, then a 4th Alarm, then a 5th Alarm.
Next, the alarm was elevated to an Inter-divisional Task Force response -- basically the next level after the 5th Alarm is reached.
Firefighters from McHenry County, Lake County and Cook County responded as part of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) pre-determined response agreement to major fires and other major emergencies.
One firefighter suffered a minor injury while responding from a fire station. No other injuries were reported.
The entire roof burned and collapsed Saturday afternoon. Firefighters were still extinguishing hot spots, primarily in the attic, until about 6:30 p.m. The dimensions of luxury mansion was about 50 x 100 square feet. A small brush fire also ignited in the rear yard area, hundreds of feet west of the house.
