3 Ejected in High Speed Crash at Devon Ave and Cumberland Ave, Park Ridge in Front of Living Sea Aquarium
Park Ridge police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:54 AM Thursday to a report of a crash with multiple injuries and ejections at Devon Avenue and Cumberland Avenue Park Ridge, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics arrived to find a crash about 100 yards from one of their fire stations.
Crews on arrival reported three victims ejected from a vehicle, and one patient inside a car with air bag deployment.
Crews reported a fire starting in the engine compartment, which was quickly extinguished.
Park Ridge Fire Department command reported three patients transported Code Red to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital and one patient Code Yellow to Resurrection Hospital in Chicago.
Witnesses at the scene reported that victims were down in the westbound lanes of Devon Avenue. One female victim wearing a Chicago Blackhawks jersey was in her car in the eastbound lanes of Devon Avenue just east of Cumberland Avenue.
An SUV was facing eastbound in the westbound lanes of Devon Avenue. The victims that were ejected apparently were traveling in the SUV. The side rear windows of the SUV were popped out, and the rear hatch window was popped open.
A witness reported that one victim down in the street was also wearing a Chicago Blackhawks jersey.
Word spread on the street among witnesses that one of the crashed vehicles -- likely the SUV -- may have been involved in a street race eastbound on Devon Avenue. The crash scene was very difficult to comprehend how the crash occurred. The debris field started as far west as the Cumberland Avenue intersection with Devon Avenue.
The debris field included wheels, radiators, windshield wiper containers, automotive electronic components, dumbbells, pillows, windshield wipers, shoes, pieces of metal and more. At least one tree was destroyed in the median of Devon Avenue just east of Cumberland Avenue.
Both vehicles had severe front-end damage.
An Accident Investigation Team worked overnight at the scene.
