No Charges Will Be Filed in Fatal Police Shooting of Ronald Johnson

Anita Alvarez, State's Attorney announced today that no criminal charges will be filed against any police officer in the fatal shooting of Ronald Johnson.

Police 9-1-1 calls and police radio audio were presented before showing the dashcam which shows the police shooting of Ronald Johnson.

Alvarez also showed another video when an offender shot a police officer in another incident. Alvarez explained how easy is for an offender to shoot an officer with an arm stretched out backward while running.

Ronald Johnson and three others left a party about 12:30 a.m. on October 12, 2014, Alvarez said, and were shot at by an unknown gunman. That shooting caused damaged to the vehicle Johnson was in, but no one vehicle occupants were injured.

"The four men drove a short distance and returned to the scene," Alvarez said. Meanwhile, residents began calling 911. Officers, including Hernandez, responded.

At this point, Alvarez said Johnson was spotted twice by police officers near the scene.

"Those officers saw that Johnson was carrying a gun and ordered him to stop and drop the weapon," Anita Alvarez said. Instead, he ran from the scene, she said.

A short time later, Johnson came across Officer Hernandez, who was told by other officers he had a gun. Hernandez was also closest to Johnson when the shots were fired.
