Local Teens Join Efforts with Arlington Pediatrics and Palatine Police to Prevent Distracted Driving; Safety Fair Jan. 30 2016

Arlington Heights, IL – We live in a world where we are constantly multitasking, which
unfortunately includes people using their cell phones while driving. Dr. David Brottman, a
practicing pediatrician at Arlington Pediatrics in the northwest suburbs has seen firsthand what
distracted driving has done to his own patients and the personal tragedies affecting families.
Because of this, Dr. Brottman founded an organization "Just Hang It Up" and his mission is to
curb cell phone use by drivers all together.
Local high school students, under the oversight of Dr. Brottman, have taken the "Just Hang It
Up" message to the public in an effort to help prevent distracted driving, particularly with the
teenage driving community.
According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, texting while driving
makes you 23 times more likely to crash and about 6 times more likely to cause an accident
than driving intoxicated.
"The use of cell phones and texting while driving is a real problem we see in law enforcement
and I am grateful for the efforts of our high school youth and the 'Just Hang it Up' program that
are trying to educate the public and stop an avoidable tragedy in the future" said Officer Andy
Olech of the Palatine Police Traffic Unit.
Just Hang It Up is joining with the staff of Arlington Pediatrics, the Palatine Police Department
and other local organizations to hold a Safety Fair on Saturday, January 30th from 10:00 a.m. to
3:00 p.m. at Arlington Pediatrics, 3325 N. Arlington Heights Road, Suite 100A in Arlington
Heights.
The Safety Fair will include a driving simulator that helps simulate distracted driving, featured
speakers discussing a wide range of topics including gun safety, child proofing homes, car seat
installation, fire home safety programs and participation by the Illinois State Police and
entertainment for young children as well as food and refreshments.
A fact sheet, data resources, partner opportunities and other information are available on the
Just Hang It Up Website at www.justhangitup.org.
