Strong Gas Odor Near Busse Rd and Central Rd and East of Melas Park, Mount Prospect

Mount Prospect police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:16 PM Thursday to a report of strong gas odor near Wille Street and Gregory Street Mount Prospect, Il. Fire crews in the area reported possibly a sewer gas type odor -- possibly in the area of "Bosch and Northwest Central Dispatch" but firefighters did not detect any odor themselves, apparently.

Firefighters were assuming the odor was sewer gas moving through the area.

A woman also called 9-1-1 to report a very strong odor of gas outdoors right in front of Bosch at about 4:52 p.m.

The two locations are about 18 blocks apart or about 1.5 miles apart -- both callers reporting an outdoor odor of gas downwind from the area of Arthur Avenue and Central Road.

WIND: West and Northwest 5 MPH

The area of Arthur Avenue has been the subject of a possible source of a variety of door from a manufacturing plant that is located on the east side of Arthur Avenue.

People have reported the odors or artificial Apple deodorant, a fruity smell, a cleaning solution smell, an unknown chemical smell, and a smell like Febreze is filling the neighbor.

Frequently the odor complaints have been reported in conditions of light winds downwind of the area in question; or in a wide area when conditions are calm (winds 0-1 MPH).

The odors have been reported in the Stongate neighborhood in Arlington Heights, Melas Park, the Mount Prospect neighborhood east of Melas Park, Mariano's parking lot in Arlington Heights, and as far north as the area of Palatine Road and Kennicott.
