Explanations for Smoke Sightings on Route 53, I-90, and I-290 in Elk Grove, Rolling Meadows, Barrington, and Westchester
Rolling Meadows police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:10 PM Wednesday to a report of a restaurant fire near Golf Road and Algonquin Road Rolling Meadows, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics in Rolling Meadows received a report of a fire that turned out to be a mistaken report. At least two callers reported that Bulldog Ale House was on fire on Golf Road west of Algonquin Road in Rolling Meadows.
Firefighters, while responding to the scene, reported that they saw fire and smoke in the background of the restaurant, which was a wildland fire in Busse Woods south of the restaurant.
Firefighters continued to investigate the restaurant, but reported no fire involving the restaurant.
Several people this afternoon also reported seeing smoke while driving on Route 53 -- some sighted the smoke as far north as Dundee Road. The smoke was rising from controlled burning of brush in Busse Woods near Higgins Road and Route 53 and Golf Road and Route 53.
Also, a brush fire was reported on Braeburn Road south of Algonquin Road. Fox River Grove FPD firefighter/paramedics responded to extinguish the brush fire about 3:43 p.m. Wednesday. The smoke from the brush fire may have been visible from Interstate 90 and from Algonquin Road.
On I-290 near Westchester, motorists may have seen smoke from a dumpster fire that spread to ignite the Grace Central Church at 10216 Kitchner Street. Westchester firefighters, responding about 3:30 p.m., saved the church with a quick stop of the fire involving the church building structure. Grace Central Church is located just southeast of the I-290 and Mannheim Road interchange in Westchester. The fire was stopped by 3:54 p.m. after a MABAS Box Alarm for an extra alarm fire response was activated at 3:39 p.m. Firefighters from Stone Park, La Grange, Maywood, Berkeley and other communities assisted Westchester firefighters at the scene. Belwood and Berwyn firefighters also stood by at Westchester fire stations to protect the rest of Westchester.
Investigators responded to the Westchester church fire.
