Gas Main Break Hit by Construction Crew on Canterbury Dr near Highland Ave, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 7:49 AM Thursday to a report that a construction crew hit a gas main with strong odor of gas in the neighborhood. , Canterbury Drive and Highland Avenue Arlington Heights, Il. Engine 4's crew on arrival reported a strong smell of gas at a congested construction scene.

Evacuation of some residents was ordered on Canterbury Drive and also on Highland Avenue by about 8:00 a.m.

Wind at 7:51 a.m. at the National Weather Service at O'Hare was West at 12 MPH gusting to 21 MPH. Wind forecast over the next 9 hours is forecast to range from 10-17 MPH with gusts to 22-28 MPH, continuing from the West.

Firefighters reported that the gas line that is broken is possibly a one-inch high pressure line.

Nicor responded to the scene and was on scene by 8:12 a.m.
