Rumor of Armed Robbery at Mariano's May Have Involved Display of a Weapon After Retail Theft Attempt, Arlington Heights
Arlington Heights police received a report about 10:29 AM Thursday of a retail theft at Mariano's, 802 East Northwest Highway Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that an unknown offender or offenders were involved in a retail theft and a gun was displayed outside the store, according to a witness. Another witness in the store reported some type of disturbance inside the store near the south cash registers closest to the produce section.
Initially there was no confirmation from the Arlington Heights Police Department, but an offender may have been confronted by store personnel in the store. The offender left the store and may have been followed outdoors by store personnel. When the offender was followed, he may have displayed a gun outside the store, and then fled the scene. The offender may have had an accomplice in a "get away car."
Arlington Heights police are investigating the incident, and possibly checking store security video to check the sequence of events. The classification of the crime (such as whether or not the crime is technically an armed robbery) is probably awaiting results of the investigation.
The crime is reported to have occurred about 4:30 p.m. Thursday, but the time is an estimate based on witness estimates and is not official information from the police.
Initially it was unknown whether the offender fled the scene with merchandise, or whether merchandise was left at the store.
A description of the vehicle and the physical description(s) of the suspect(s) were not initially available.
The information in this article is an unconfirmed report published before any information was confirmed or released by the Arlington Heights Police Department.
