Theft Of Wallet From Shopping Cart At Goodwill Store On Dryden; Fraudulent Charges Over $7,000 At Target, Arlington Heights, Walmart Palatine

Arlington Heights police received a report about 4:00 PM Wednesday of a theft of a wallet at the Goodwill Store, 1551 North Dryden Avenue Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that an unknown offender or offenders took a victim's black Coach bi-fold wallet, valued at $150.

The wallet contained $200 cash, various credit cards, several gift cards valued at $400, and a checkbook.

The clerk at Goodwill responded by offering to file an in-store report instead of immediately calling the police. The victim called her husband, who immediately called to shut down the credit cards that were in the wallet.

The credit cards were used to make fraudulent charges worth several thousand dollars to purchase items at another store.

About $4,000 in charges were used to successfully purchase electronics and other items at the Target Store at Rand Road and Thomas Street in Arlington Heights.

About another $50 was charged for gas at a Speedway, and at least another $3,000 in charges were used to purchase items at Walmart near Rand Road and Dundee Road in Palatine.

Video surveillance in several stores is believed to match at least two subjects wearing a hoodies and sunglasses, which make them hard to identify.

A pickpocket crew was possibly involved because of the speed of purchases made in Arlington Heights and Palatine.

The crime is reported to have occurred on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 between 3:50 p.m. and 3:55 p.m. The victim did not believe she was ever away from her purse while she was in the Goodwill store, and believes she was possibly distracted by one of the offenders while the purse was stolen.

Power Outage "Transformer Hit" Power Lines Down Near Roosevelt And Central Rd, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 11:28 PM Tuesday to a report of a transformer hit by lightning with arching and flames in the block of 900 South Roosevelt Avenue Arlington Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that lightning may have struck a transformer. Fire and arcing was reported to be spreading near some trees -- possibly behind March Animal Hospital, 1000 East Central Road.

Firefighters on the scene reported power out in the area, and discovered two power lines down. The power lines down were reported as pole-to-pole power lines -- not a pole-to-house service drop.

The lines are down in the backyards between Dryden Place and Roosevelt Avenue, and between Central Road and Orchard Street.

ComEd had a delayed ETA due to numerous jobs in the area because of severe thunderstorms in the area, but arrived about midnight. At about 12:02 a.m. Wednesday, ComEd reported they were investigating a power failure with a marker near Banbury Road and Fairview Street indicating that 984 customers were without power.

Fire crews left the scene after Com Ed arrived as there was apparently no fire threat in the area at midnight.

About 730 customers were without power near Palatine Road just west of Route 53 in Palatine.

About five customers were also without power in the area of Miner Street and Windsor Drive in Arlington Heights.

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 1:48 AM Tuesday to a report of a restaurant fire at Salsa 17, 17 West Campbell Street Arlington Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that smoke and fire was showing through the roof after a passerby saw the smoke and flames and called 9-1-1. Firefighters took the aerial ladder from Tower 1 to the roof and a ground ladder to the east side of the building in the alley. With power saws they cut open the roof for ventilation and exposed areas in the roof that were still burning. The rest of the fire was extinguished within about 35 minutes.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters from Rolling Meadows assisted Arlington Heights firefighters at the scene.

The Village of Arlington Heights Building Department and the Health Department sent out an inspector to check the building.

Firefighters put a good stop on the fire, especially with winds fanning the fire from the South at 16 MPH with gust to 26 MPH.

Fight At Streamwood High School: Six Students Arrested, Streamwood

Streamwood police responded about 11:15 AM Tuesday to Streamwood High School, 701 W Schaumburg Rd Streamwood , IL. Police received a report of a fight in progress and Streamwood High School administrators then put the school in a "hold in place" mode Tuesday afternoon. At least 20 police vehicles were on the scene. The fight quickly calmed down when police arrived.

Six students were arrested, no known weapons were used, and no significant injuries were reported.

Neither police nor the school district have offered details on the nature of the fight or any details of the arrests, but CBS 2 Chicago is reporting the fight was a "racially-based" lunchroom brawl. A quote from one student reports that at least 40 kids were fighting. The fight moved from the lunchroom to the second floor and into offices, according to the witness report.

Another witness reported "African-Americans" and "Hispanics" were "attacking each other today." Apparently tensions have been building for at least a few weeks with some verbal fighting on Facebook and Twitter.

On their official Twitter account, School District U-46 referred to the fight as "the situation" and reported about 12:16 p.m. that "the situation is calm" and that Streamwood High School is currently in a "hold in place."

According to the United States Census Bureau report of Streamwood, the population considered "one race" category are 66 percent white, 4.5 percent Black or African American, and 15 percent Asian.

The Hispanic or Latino population is reported at 28.2 percent of the entire Streamwood population.

Police from Bartlett, Cook County Sheriff, Elgin, Hanover Park, and Schaumburg assisted Streamwood police officers.

About the same time as the Streamwood High School fight on Tuesday, Palatine police were conducting a school shooting drill. The drill at a Palatine school district did not involve staff or students. There are additional police drills in Palatine scheduled during the remainder of May.

Extra supervision is planned for Streamwood High School Wednesday morning.
