Former Chief Technology Officer at Christian Liberty Academy Arrested; Accused of Transferring $293K from School for Personal Gain

A former administrator and technology officer of Christian Liberty Academy was charged this week with allegedly engaging in a financial crimes scheme for his personal benefit, officials with the Office of Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez said Wednesday. Michael Burrei, 41, a former chief technology officer at the Christian Liberty Academy in Arlington Heights and current resident of Tennessee, was charged with the felony offenses of theft from a school or place of worship and continuing a financial crimes enterprise. The charges followed an investigation by the State's Attorney's Financial Crimes Unit and the Arlington Heights Police Department, officials said. Burrei is alleged to have transferred more than $293,000 in school revenues for his own personal use over the course of a 15-month period, officials said. According to prosecutors, Burrei created a PayPal account in July 2013 to enable online purchases to be made on the school's online store. T

EgyptAir Hijacker Surrenders at Lrnaca International Airport

A suspect, identified by Cypriot and Egyptian officials as Seif Eldin Mustafa, has surrendered after hijacking EgyptAir Flight #MS181. The suspect is an Egyptian living in Cyprus whose motive was not clear. He either wanted to his estranged wife or seek the release of female prisoners in Egypt. He told the pilot that he was wearing a suicide belt and threatened to detonate it, but the suicide belt was later determined to be fake. The hijacker diverted the Alexandria-to-Cairo flight to Larnaca International Airport. EgyptAir reported the Airbus A320 was carrying 56 passengers from Alexandria to Cairo, along with six crew members and a security official. A statement from Egypt's civil aviation ministry said 26 foreign passengers were on board, including eight Americans, four Britons, four Dutch citizens, two Belgians, two Greeks, a French national, an Italian and a Syrian. "An Incident" Kills a Woman at Article II Gun Range on Cortland Ave, Lombard

A Chicago woman died Thursday, March 24, 2016 after an incident on Wednesday at a gun range in west suburban Lombard. Caitlin McAtee, 24, died as a result of "an incident" at the Article II Gun Range at 250 Cortland Ave. in Lombard, according to the DuPage County coroner's office. McAtee was pronounced dead Thursday at Level I Trauma Center Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Additional details, including her cause and manner of death, were not immediately available. Lombard police and Article II aren't talking. Police are investigating, but there are no initial indications of foul play. Armed Robbers Faces Blanked Out in Marathon Gas Station Robbery in Unincorporated Palatine

Lake County Sheriff's Deputies were responded about 11:25 p.m. Tuesday March 22, 2016 to the Marathon Gas Station, 20235 N Rand Road, Unincorporated Palatine to the report of an armed robbery. The store clerk called 911 and reported he had been robbed at gun-point by two male individuals. The offenders stole cash during the robbery and then fled on foot, south toward Lake Cook Road. Stolen Van from Arlington Heights Involved in Hit-and-Run Crash at Lake Cook Rd and Hicks Rd, Palatine

Condo Fire on Baldwin Way Near Nichols Rd and Baldwin Rd, Palatine Kills 2 Pet Birds

Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 11:34 PM Friday to a report of a condominium fire at 2254 North Baldwin Way Palatine, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that there was a fire in a bedroom in a condominium unit. Police officers arriving first on the scene advised they had heavy smoke showing, and the response was upgraded to a working fire response. Police Searching for Jermaine Powell After Death of Catherine Benyamin on Keating Ave, Skokie

Skokie police responded about 10:24 AM Thursday to a check for well-being in the block of 8200 Keating Avenue Skokie, IL. Police arrived at the address and found Catherine Benyamin dead in her apartment.A death investigation is underway and police believe the death is a homicide. Arlington Heights Residents: Register to Have Smoke Detectors Checked Saturday, April 2

On Saturday, April 2, Arlington Heights residents can have new batteries placed in their home smoke detectors at no cost and faulty detectors replaced through "The Katie Project," a community initiative that started three years ago following a devastating fire that killed three women inside a home on Dunton Avenue where there was an inoperable smoke detector. The goal of "The Katie Project" is to make fire safety easy and to help ensure that more homes in Arlington Heights have working smoke detectors. This initiative is named after Village Trustee Joe Farwell's cousin who died in a home fire in the 1970s before it was commonplace to have smoke detectors in homes. Arlington Heights Police K-9 Receives Donation for Bulletproof Vest from Animal Feeds and Needs, Fromm Family Pet Food

Arlington Heights Police Department K9 unit received a monetary donation to acquire a special canine bulletproof vest. Yara, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, joined the Police Department in September 2015. Officer Jeff Tegtmeyer and Yara trained together at Vohne Liche in Denver, Indiana for five weeks creating a strong working partnership. Together, they patrol the community supporting a law enforcement and public relations mission. Like police officers, K9 partners are equally susceptible to violence by the criminal element. In fact, a police working dog Web page details over 90 canines killed in the line of duty from gun or sharp force traumatic injury in the past 10-years ( www.cpwda.com ). Several bulletproof vest manufacturers recognized this threat and also produce a ballistic garment for police dogs. Two companies teamed up to purchase a safety vest for K9 Yara. Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:09 PM Wednesday to a report of a pedestrian hit by a vehicle at Park Street and Mitchell Avenue Arlington Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a 9-year-old boy was hit by a car. The boy was leaving Our Lady of the Wayside Church, 434 West Park Street, when he was hit by a vehicle driven southbound on Mitchell Avenue, according to police. The boy was transported by Arlington Heights Fire Department firefighter/paramedics to Northwest Community Hospital. He was alert and conscious and was not believed to have life-threatening injuries. Police reported that boy ran out into the street while obscured by a parked car. The location where the boy entered the street was also not at the intersection crosswalk. This morning's Chicago 2016 Shamrock Beer Run in downtown Arlington Heights was a success. The run began a little late after the scheduled 11:00 a.m. start time, but that didn't break any enthusiasm for the participants. The race began just west of Vail Avenue and Campbell Street (217 W. Campbell Street), and proceeded in streets south of downtown Arlington Heights to as far south as Orchard Street The fun run involved a post-run get together at the finish line on Highland Avenue, just south of Campbell Street. The sights to see included green face paint, green wigs, green dyed hair, big hats, orange beards, and a lot of bright green clothing. The event served alcohol, so local laws and ordinances applied, and participation was limited to those who are 21 years of age or older. A valid proof of age ID was required to receive a wrist band that signifies an approved participant. The crowd was friendly, and it appeared there were no problems on the route. A large crow
