Police Activity Near Randville And Cunningham: Multiple Chemical Bombs Discovered On Apartment Back Patio

Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 1:17 PM Sunday to a report of a "Bleach Bomb" off of the back patio of an apartment  in the 1100 block of East Randville. Firefighters on the scene reported at least on device that appeared to be under pressure.  The Cook County Bomb Squad was called for what appeared to be a chemical bomb ina plastic container. Multiple devices were discovered , and one possible went off before the bomb squad.

No reports of any injuries. Drano bombs or MacGyver bombs are commonly left on the ground by pranksters or people who intend to do harm. A chemical reaction of aluminum foil and the Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) source, such as Drano drain cleaner or toilet cleaner.

Homemade chemical bombs are typically made with toilet bowl cleaner or drain cleaner and aluminum foil in a capped plastic bottle, such as a plastic pop bottle. Shaking the contents in a capped bottle accelerates the reaction of the aluminum foil with the chemical of the cleaner, which causes a heat or exothermic reaction and pressurizes the interior of the bottle until it explodes. The speed of the chemical reaction is unpredictable, so a person can be injured while shaking the bottle if the reaction goes fast. Serious personal injuries are possible: chemical burns to the eyes, blindness, chemical burns of the skin (causing scarring), small blast injury to the skin, projectile injury from broken pieces of the bottle or the bottle cap. Chlorine gas can also be released, which can cause respiratory irritation.

It's usually a good idea to leave a plastic bottle containing strange liquid alone, and call 9-1-1.

No reports of any injuries Sunday. Palatine police are investigating.

Chicago Fire: Over 200 Chicago Firefighters Fight 5-11 Alarm Fire At Warehouse Building On Nelson St

Chicago firefighters and paramedics responded about 2:00 AM Sunday to a warehouse fire in the 2600 block of West Nelson Street. Chicago firefighters arrived on the scene to discover a fire toward the center of the building, which was hard to access. The fire had already spread to the upper three floors of the old style multi-purpose brick warehouse.

Two parts of the building collapsed while firefighters were working, but firefighters were taking collapse precautions, and no injuries were reported.

A large number of ladder trucks and fire engines surrounded the block. Support vehicles, such as a hose wagon, turret wagon, extra turret truck, breathing apparatus truck, rehab  truck, a road service truck, the command vehicle and several other vehicles also were on the scene.

A firefighter rehab area was marked off with blue tape. Twelve major hose streams were dumping water on the fire with good heavy water streams in defensive fire attack mode. The water department was standing by in case there was any trouble with water flow.

The 5-11 was struck out about 9:25 a.m. The fire officer accidentally called out for a strike out of the box -- a lesser size fire. The dispatcher replied, "I think you mean the 5-11."  The officer answered back, "Yes, the 5-11 (he chuckled as this was no ordinary box).

"Idle Free Zone" Signs To Encourage Less Idling

7:01 AM Wednesday   With school back in full swing, many of us are dropping off and picking up children from school and other activities. At many drop-off and pick-up areas by schools, park facilities and the library, you may see an "Idle Free Zone" sign that's been installed in the parkway.

The Village recently completed the installation of "Idle Free Zone signs" as part of a new initiative, "Idle Free Arlington." that encourages drivers to consider idling their vehicles less while waiting in pick-up and drop-off areas, waiting in line at a drive-thru or waiting in traffic at a train crossing. Click here for more information on what you can do to idle less and of the positive benefits the result.

To further promote "Idle Free Arlington," the Village is running this video message on its cable access channels as a reminder that idling less leads to a healthier environment.

Throughout the Village drivers will see "Idle Free Zone" signs in areas where increased idling typically occurs. The signs increase awareness about idling and encourage drivers to consider turning off their vehicles to decrease idling. The Park District, Arlington Heights Memorial Library and the School Districts support the Village's initiative and have joined in a collaborative community effort to help fund the cost of the signage and to have signs installed on their property.

The Village's 2013 vehicle sticker features the "Idle Free" message and will further prompt drivers to consider idling their vehicles less. In working together, the Idle Free Arlington campaign can help improve air quality and help everyone "breathe easy."

Firefighters on Park Ridge Tower Ladder 36 attacked the fire from overhead, and at least three hose lines worked from the ground. A single-story home next-door was an exposure risk and was wet-down as flames broke out. Winds were from the South at about 14 mph at 4:51 p.m. at O'Hare International Airport, and were a factor in fanning the fire.

A work van was parked on the front driveway, but no report yet whether work was underway at the home.
