Northwest Community Hospital (NCH) Offers Early Lung Cancer Screening Program
For smokers and former smokers, the risk of getting lung cancer is much higher than for non-smokers. But high-risk smokers can breathe a sigh of relief with a program at Northwest Community Healthcare (NCH) that diagnoses lung problems at the earliest possible stage.
NCH's Early Lung Cancer Screening program enables patients to find out if their lungs are cancer-free by taking a quick and painless, low-dose CT scan, which enables doctors to search for signs of cancer at an earlier stage – when lung cancer is most treatable.
Traditional X-rays provide a 2-dimensional view of the chest, showing not only the lungs, but the heart, bone and soft tissue – all of which can mask abnormalities. Low-dose CT lung scans create a detailed, 3-D image, giving doctors a clearer, unobstructed view of the lungs – and the ability to detect tiny nodules that would often not be visible on a chest X-ray.

Palatine Fire Department Begins Kids Life Jacket Loaner Program
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, every day, about 10 people die from unintentional drowning and unfortunately, children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates. In an effort to prevent some of these unfortunate incidents, the Palatine Fire Department has partnered with the BoatU.S. Foundation to provide free, loaner life jackets for children.
The program allows for families to check out children's life jackets for a period of up to one week. We encourage their use while vacationing near water, days at local pool, boating, or for any water related activity. Life jacket use during any of these activities will greatly benefit your child's safety. This program is very popular during the summer but loaner life jackets remain available year round.
Life jackets have been provided by the BoatU.S. Foundation and are designed for children from 5 lbs. and up. The Palatine Fire Department currently has a limited supply of 88 life jackets in four different sizes (Infant, Child, Youth and Young Adult).
To check out life jackets, call the Palatine Fire Department at 847-202-6340 or simply stop by any of our four fire stations including; Station 82 - 1475 N. Hicks Road, Station 83 – 987 E. Palatine Road, Station 84 – 220 W. Illinois Avenue or Station 85 – 39 E. Colfax Street. All loans require some basic information including a copy of your Driver's License and the number of days you intend to use the life jacket. When possible, please bring the child with so a firefighter can properly size them with the appropriate life vest.
The members of the Palatine Fire Department want everyone to have a fun summer and remind you to have your children wear a life jacket in, on or around water. Remember, "Life jackets float, you don't."

Schaumburg Traffic Safety And Expanded 4th Of July Safety Program Begins Saturday
Schaumburg, Il - Schaumburg police officers have installed an expanded safety program for this 4th of July holiday. With extra coverage on the street, and using social media, the department aims to prevent citizen injuries and accidents related to 4th of July celebrations. The village wishes to provide residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy the upcoming holiday in a safe manner.
Beginning Saturday June 29th and running nightly through Saturday July 6th, additional officers will be assigned to traffic safety enforcement patrols. Their primary objectives will be to enforce violations of drunk driving and failure to wear a seatbelt. Both violations could result in serious injury accidents.
During the evening of July 4th, four additional officers will be assigned to patrol and respond to fireworks complaints. The department will employ a zero-tolerance approach to illegal fireworks.
The police departments Community Relations Unit will begin a social media campaign aimed at topics related to traffic and fireworks safety, including a new public service announcement video that will live on the Village's Facebook page and YouTube. Several varied messages will be shared with the community daily on Facebook (Village of Schaumburg) and Twitter (@SchaumburgIL).
The men and women of the Schaumburg Police Department are working to ensure a happy, healthy, and safe holiday week.

Independence Day Traffic Enforcement Activities Begin Tomorrow In Arlington Heights
The Arlington Heights Police Department will commence specialized traffic enforcement activities relating to the Illinois Department of Transportation's "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" holiday enforcement campaign from June 28th through July 7, 2013. Enforcement activities will include extra impaired driving saturation patrols and two Roadside Safety Checkpoints. The checkpoints will take place on June 28th & 29th on Arlington Heights Road south of Algonquin Road.
Officers working the campaign will be attempting to identify and cite motorists who choose to drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, without using their safety belts, and who are committing other traffic-related offenses. Enforcement efforts will focus on late-night hours, since statistics show a disproportionate number of traffic deaths occur late at night and involve impaired drivers and unbuckled motorists.
Hundreds of other law enforcement agencies throughout the state will also be participating in the statewide campaign. The campaign is funded with federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which are administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation – Division of Traffic Safety.

Now That Public Safety Communications In Arlington Heights Are A Secret, Arlington Heights Public Information, Twitter Account Show Serious Deficiency In An Emergency
8:33 AM Thursday ENTER ADDRESS. Now that Arlington Heights police and fire communications cannot be monitored by the media or by neighborhood watch and other safety groups, the Village of Arlington Heights public information efforts show a serious deficiency and lack of effort to keep the public aware in emergencies.
A deluge of rain caused numerous flooding issues that closed businesses and closed roads in the area. Also numerous power failures occurred in neighborhoods.
Some drivers were stranded in vehicles, which required mutual aid help from Prospect Heights firefighter/paramedics.
Arlington Heights official twitter account had no information about the storm. The twitter account showed a disconnect with the reality that was occurring in the village.
The latest information tweeted and observed on June 26, 2013 related to a free concert on June 21, 2013.
The twitter account also showed inconsistency to a degree of lack of dependability.
A Flash Flood Watch was tweeted for June 12, 2012, but the Flash Flood Watch issued for June 26, 2013 was not tweeted. Also the Flash Flood Warning issued at 5:31 a.m. was not tweeted.
The Village of Arlington Heights should either keep the official twitter account limited to community relations events or it should do a full-time job of alerting the community regarding public safety issues on its existing account or create a separate public safety account that combines police and fire safety activity.
Arlington Heights is a large enough community to handle this task with excellence. Cities, such as Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Portland, Schaumburg and many others already notify their citizens of public safety issues, road closures, power failures or other major emergencies in their communities.

Crash Landing On Wolf Road North Of Hintz Road In Wheeling
Wheeling police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 8:27 PM Wednesday to a report of a plane crash at the north end of Chicago Executive Airport. The actual address was at Wolf Road and Inland Drive Wheeling, IL.. Police arrived within three minutes and reported no injuries on the scene. The aircraft apparently experienced operational problems and the pilot attempted to land the plane heading southbound on Wolf Road.
Witness Seetharam Munipally was playing volleyball nearby when he first saw a vehicle suddenly turn around to get off of Wolf Road. He soon learned that the vehicle made a quick turn to avoid the Beechcraft Super King Air 200 that was making a crash landing on Wolf Road. Seetharam turned to see the aircraft coming in for a landing. The plane was headed southbound to the left of the actual flight path for Runway 16 at Chicago Executive Airport. As it touched down, the aircraft hit a tree that spun it around to the right, then the nose of the aircraft hit a second tree. Seetharam saw a man standing near the aircraft on a cell phone. He learned the man was the pilot and saw that the pilot was alright.
Authorities report the pilot had minor injuries. No fire started, but there was a smell of jet fuel near the aircraft. No fuel leak was visible.
The pilot is credited with possibly saving lives by landing the aircraft on and near Wolf Road, and avoiding a crash with apartment buildings nearby.
Hundreds of people came out to see the aircraft parked on the side of the road.

Storm Damage, Lines Down, Small Power Line-Related Fires, Tree Branches Down In Northwest And North Suburbs
Storm causes multiple problems in northwest suburbs. Prospect Heights firefighters responded about 6:05 p.m. to a fire at a house with reported lines down in the 700 block of Maple Street. Firefighters on the scene called for Com Ed to respond to the scene.
Numerous trees and lines are reported down, especially in the area near Golf Mill. Firefighters are on the scene of power lines down behind Walmart on Golf Road. Firefighters reported multiple primary lines down with multiple fires -- apparently on the ground in the area -- at Maynard Road and Kay Street.
On June 5, 2013, Arlington Heights Fire Department and several surrounding fire departments switched to a radio dispatch channel that cannot be monitored by the media. None of these fire departments have real time social media notifications, as do several major cities, such as Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Portland.

When We Say Chance Of Thunderstorms After 1:00 Am We Hope We Mean It
A line of thunderstorms that was in east-central Iowa this morning has not dissipated as much as expected, and is still holding together while crossing McHenry County and while entering Kane County.
There is a good chance these storms will barely amount to anything by the time they reach Arlington Heights and the northwest suburbs, but you might here some thunder rumbling. A few small cells are also trying to develop directly overhead, but they are barely amounting to anything.
Residents of Kane County, DuPage County, Kendall County and Will County are more likely to see some thunderstorms.

Sunday Driving: Driver Jeep Liberty Smashes Mini Cooper At St James Parking Lane On Arlington Heights Rd, Arlington Heights
Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:30 AM Sunday to a crash with air bag deployment in the block of 700 North Arlington Heights Road Arlington Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a vehicle hit a parked car in the northbound curb lane of Arlington Heights Road. The driver of a Jeep Liberty hit a Mini Cooper S, which pushed into a Kia sedan. The Mini Cooper and Kia sedan were parked in the right lane, which is permitted on Sundays from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The driver was not injured, and apparently no people were in the parked vehicles, but firefighter/paramedics responded because of the air bag activation.
Recovery crews from Hillside Towing had a little trouble because the Jeep Liberty and the Mini Cooper S were stuck together after the crash. Both vehicles were secured by two flat bed tow trucks and pulled away from each other. Police took car to make sure people cleared the area near sidewalk in case an debris went flying during the separation.
Traffic was slightly delayed as the roadway down to one lane in both directions was occasionally blocked totally to maneuver the tow vehices. The road way was cleared by about 11:30 a.m.

Arlington Heights Resident Scammed Out Of $3,200 In Mystery Shopper Check Fraud
Arlington Heights police received a report about 9:05 AM Sunday of Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that an unknown offender or offenders sent a letter and email to the victim asking him to be part of the Mystery Shopper Program. He was sent three fraudulent checks for over $1,600 each. The victim was told to deposit the checks, keep $200 from each check and then wire the remainder via Western Union to a location in the Philippines. He was told by his banker the checks were fraudulent after he wired the remaining funds from the first check. The victim's total loss is approximately $3,200.
According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) it is law that banks must make the funds from deposited checks available within days, but uncovering a fake check can take weeks. It may seem that the check has cleared and that the money has posted to the account, but when the check turns out to be a fake, the person who deposited the check and wired the money will be responsible for paying back the bank.
It's never a good idea to deposit a check from someone you don't know and then wire money back.
Anyone having information about this or any other serious crime in Arlington Heights should submit an anonymous text tip by texting the keyword 847AHPD and your message to 847411(tip411) or call Arlington Heights Crime Stoppers at (847) 590-STOP. Callers are guaranteed anonymity and may qualify for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
