Townhouse Fire On Heather Ln Near Nichols Rd, Palatine
Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded Thursday, June 26, 2014 at 2:25 p.m., to a report of a "wall smoking" at 2153 N. Heather Ln. in Palatine. The first Palatine Fire Department crews arrived on the scene at 2:32 p.m. and reported smoke showing from the 2149 unit in the 2-story, 5-unit townhouse building. The first ire companies forced entry into the unit and found a fire burning inside a wall. The call was upgraded to a working fire response, and firefighters pulled a hoseline into the unit to attack the fire, as other firefighters began to open the wall and ceiling to expose the hidden fire. Other fire crews forced entry into the other units in building, finding smoke in three other units. The 2155 unit, which adjoins the fire unit, was also found to have fire in the common wall which required firefighters to pull a hoseline into that unit as well and open the wall to expose and extinguish the fire. Occupants from all units could not be immediately accounted for, so firefighters searched the entire building to ensure that all residents had exited. No one was found in the building, but one dog was safely removed. Other crews laddered the building, provided for emergency medical coverage, ventilated smoke from the building and spread tarps in the affected units to protect furniture and other belongings from water and smoke damage. The fire was declared under control at 2:52 p.m. Firefighters continued to ventilate smoke and gases and perform salvage and overhaul activities for some time after that.
No civilians or firefighters were injured in the fire, which left two units uninhabitable. Damage estimates are not available at the time of this release, and the fire remains under investigation by Palatine Fire Department investigators.
The fire was fought by 23 firefighters, staffing three engines, two ladder trucks, one rescue squad and three ambulances which responded to the scene along with three command officers and two Fire Investigators.
Units from the Arlington Heights Fire Department and the Lake Zurich Fire District were among the responders to the scene as part of an automatic aid agreement. During the incident, a unit from the Rolling Meadows Fire Department stood by in a Palatine fire station to provide coverage for any additional calls. Palatine Police officers assisted at the scene with traffic and crowd control, and an inspector from Palatine Neighborhood Services also responded to evaluate the structure and units for habitability.
The fire is under investigation. There was a report of plumbers working in the building, but the cause of the fire has not yet been officially determined.
The Palatine Fire Department reminds everyone to have working smoke detectors in their homes, whether a single-family dwelling, an apartment or a condo. Have an escape plan, practice it, and be prepared to use it in
the event of any fire.

Free Life Jacket Loaner Program From Palatine Fire Department
According to the Center for Disease Control, every day, about 10 people die from unintentional drowning and unfortunately, children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates. In an effort to prevent some of these unfortunate incidents, the Palatine Fire Department has partnered with the BoatU.S. Foundation to provide free, loaner life jackets for children.
The program allows for families to check out children's life jackets for a period of up to one week. We encourage their use while vacationing near water, days at local pool, boating, or for any water related activity.
Life jacket use during any of these activities will greatly benefit your child's safety. This program is very popular during the summer but loaner life jackets remain available year round.
Life jackets have been provided by the BoatU.S. Foundation and are designed for children from 5 lbs. and up.
The Palatine Fire Department currently has a limited supply of 88 life jackets in four different sizes (Infant, Child, Youth and Young Adult).
To check out life jackets, call the Palatine Fire Department at 847-202-6340 or simply stop by any of our four fire stations including; Station 82 - 1475 N. Hicks Road, Station 83 – 987 E. Palatine Road, Station 84 – 220 W.
Illinois Avenue or Station 85 – 39 E. Colfax Street. All loans require some basic information including a copy of your Driver's License and the number of days you intend to use the life jacket. When possible, please bring the child with so a firefighter can properly size them with the appropriate life vest.
The members of the Palatine Fire Department want everyone to have a fun summer and remind you to have your children wear a life jacket in, on or around water. Remember, "Life jackets float, you don't."

Contractor Hits Gas Line Near Northwest Highway And Plum Grove Rd, Palatine
Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 8:04 AM Tuesday to a gas odor investigation at Plum Grove Road and Northwest Highway Palatine, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that of an odor of
natural gas in the area of Plum Grove Road and Northwest Highway in Palatine. The first Palatine Fire Department unit arrived on the scene at 8:09 a.m. and reported that a contractor digging in the area had struck a 2" gas line, with a significant gas leak. The first fire company requested NICOR to respond for the broken gas line, police for traffic control and additional Fire Department assistance. The call was upgraded to a Hazardous Materials response, bringing to the scene a total of 9 firefighters and one command officer, staffing one engine, one ladder truck, one rescue squad, one ambulance and a command unit. Traffic on Northwest Highway was shut down in both directions, eventually from Smith St. to Benton St, and both directions on Plum Grove Road north of Comfort St. Fire crews monitored for gas levels in nearby businesses and a residential neighborhood north of the scene. They also pulled a hoseline as a precaution. NICOR crews arrived on the scene and began work to control the leak. Palatine Police and Palatine Emergency Management Agency volunteers rerouted traffic during the incident, keeping vehicles away from the incident site to minimize the risk of ignition. The leak was controlled at 11:50 a.m. Fire crews picked up from the scene, with NICOR crews remaining on site to complete repair of the damaged gas line.
No civilians or firefighters were injured in the incident, and no evacuations were necessary, although firefighters monitored gas levels in the area throughout the incident. The brisk wind helped dissipate the gas relatively quickly as it was released.
The Palatine Fire Department reminds everyone to call the Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators (J.U.L.I.E.) at 8-1-1 prior to any digging or excavation. If you smell gas inside a building, evacuate and call 9-1-1.

First West Nile Virus Positive Test In Dead Bird In Henry County Northwest Of Peoria
The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has confirmed the first West Nile virus positive bird and mosquito batch reported in Illinois for 2014. Henry County Health Department employees collected a positive bird on May 29, 2014 in Colona and Madison County Health Department employees collected a positive mosquito batch on May 30, 2014 in Godfrey.
"West Nile virus activity is largely dependent on the weather. Despite our cold winter, mosquitoes are becoming active and infected with West Nile virus as the temperature increase. If we see a hot, dry summer, we could see a lot of West Nile virus activity," said IDPH Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck. "We want to remind people not to be complacent. Take precautions to protect yourself by wearing insect repellent and taking other precautions."
The first West Nile virus positive result in 2013 was a mosquito batch collected on May 21, 2013 in Cook County. Last year, 76 counties in Illinois reported a West Nile virus positive mosquito batch, bird and/or human case. For the 2013 season, IDPH reported 117 human cases, including 11 deaths. No human cases of West Nile virus have been reported so far this year.
Surveillance for West Nile virus in Illinois includes laboratory tests on mosquito batches, dead crows, blue jays, robins and other perching birds, as well as testing sick horses and humans with West Nile virus-like symptoms. People who observe a sick or dying crow, blue jay, robin or other perching bird should contact their local health department, which will determine if the bird will be picked up for testing.
West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.
Common West Nile virus symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks. However, four out of five people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms. In rare cases, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur. People older than 50 are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile Virus.
As temperatures warm up, remember to take some simple precautions to reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home and protect yourself from being bitten. Precautions include practicing the three "R's" – reduce, repel and report.
REDUCE exposure - avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn.
Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings. Try to keep doors and windows shut, especially at night.
Eliminate all sources of standing water where mosquitoes can breed, including flowerpots, wading pools, old tires and any other receptacles. Change water in birdbaths weekly.
REPEL - when outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535, according to label instructions. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants.
REPORT – report dead birds to your local health department. In communities where there are organized mosquito control programs, contact your municipal government about areas of stagnant water in roadside ditches, flooded yards and similar locations that may produce mosquitoes.

Diy Large Tree Removal Requires Rescue And A Little Help From Arlington Heights Public Works Forestry Department
Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:07 PM Saturday to a report of a tree hazard near Hawthorne Street and Pine Avenue Arlington Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a man was taking down a large tree when he became alarmed that the tree might not fall in the direction that he intended.
Concerned about the potential danger, the man bringing down the tree, suspended his do it yourself project and called 9-1-1 for help
The tree was secured with a cable with the intention of bringing down the tree in a southwesterly direction onto an empty lawn in the front yard. However, while sawing at the base, the cable tension increased dramatically -- indicating the tree might fall in a northeasterly direction across Hawthorne Street and onto some overhead information utility lines.
Firefighters investigated the scene and called for the public works duty man to respond to the scene. Tree experts from the forestry department responded to the scene and secured another line at a higher angle and secured it to the frame of a pickup truck.
With additional sawing and some tension from the pickup truck line, the tree fell in the intended direction onto the front lawn.

Salmonella Outbreak May Be Linked To Tinley Park Jewel Store At 171st And Harlem
Cook County Department of Public Health officials and Tinley Park officials are investigating a salmonella outbreak linked to the Jewel Osco store Deli Department in Tinley Park at 171st Street and Harlem Avenue. after nine people became ill.
Jewel officials temporarily closed the store's service deli Wednesday "out of an abundance of caution," according to Jewel. The deli reopened later Wednesday.
Amy Poore, spokeswoman for the Cook County Department of Public Health, said the county is investigating the nine cases of illness after food items were linked back to the Jewel.
The Cook County Health Department notified Jewel of a potential concern at the Tinley Park store
Jewel worked with the Cook County Health Department to remove and replace all necessary product, All work surfaces, utensils and storage cases of the deli were cleaned and sanitized.
Workers at Jewel must submit stool samples to help determine whether the outbreak started with an employee. It is rare to pinpoint a specific food as the source of salmonella, which is more likely pass along by a food handler.
There is no longer a threat to the public, according to Jewel, and customers who have purchased food from the Tinley Park service deli who would like to return it for a replacement or refund may visit any Jewel store for assistance.
There is no alert or notice regarding the incident on the Jewel-Osco website or social media channels. Likewise there is no alert or notice on the Cook County Department of Public Health website or social media channels regarding the incident.

Chicago Man Stopped On Dee Rd, Charged With Public Indecency After Driving Through Condo Complex Without Pants
COOK COUNTY, IL – A 54-year-old man with a history of public indecency arrests has been charged again after it was reported he drove pantsless through a condominium complex in unincorporated Des Plaines, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said today.
About 7:20 p.m. on Thursday, Sheriff's Police were called to the 9900 block of Linda Lane on a report that a man, nude from the waist down, was gratifying himself while driving a silver 2011 Toyota Camry.
The vehicle which matched the description and the license plate of the vehicle the caller saw was stopped by Sheriff's Police officers in the 9500 block of Dee Road. The driver was identified as Aleksandar Mihailovic. Witnesses identified him as the offender, and he was taken into custody.
Officers also found pornographic magazines and other items inside the vehicle. Detectives learned that Mihailovic, of the 6500 block of West Irving Park in Chicago, has three previous convictions for public indecency and a previous conviction for criminal sexual abuse.
Mihailovic was charged with one count of felony public indecency. He appeared at the Skokie Courthouse today where his bond was set at $30,000.
His next court date is scheduled for July 1 at the Skokie Courthouse. Sheriff's Police believe he may have committed similar offenses in nearby jurisdictions. Sheriff Dart
asks any with information to contact Sheriff's Police at 708-865-4896.
Sheriff Dart also reminds the public that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the government in a court of law.

Village Of Arlington Heights Homeless Outreach Program Wins Award From Icma
Arlington Heights is receiving a Community Partnership award from the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) for a Homeless Outreach Program that is a collaborative effort between the Police Department and Alexian Brothers Center for Mental Health based in Arlington Heights. The Village will receive the award at ICMA's 100th Annual Conference in mid- September.
The Community Partnership Award recognizes successful programs between local governments and other entities that improve the quality of life for residents and provide more efficient and effective services. Arlington Heights started the Homeless Outreach program several years ago as a way to provide resources to the homeless population that could assist them in returning to a mainstream lifestyle.
Some years ago, Arlington Heights' Downtown area became attractive to homeless people because of its close proximity to several public buildings, parks and parking garages that offer a place to congregate and find shelter. While local religious institutions in conjunction with Journeys the Road Home have a successful overnight shelter program for the homeless, there are still some homeless people who do not avail themselves of the program. The Homeless Outreach program enabled the Police to do much more than focus on violations of the law. Instead, Police and Alexian Brothers worked together to positively influence the lives of homeless people who may be suffering from a mental illness and/or chemical dependency issues.
"The Arlington Heights Police Department and Alexian Brothers Center for Mental Health collaborated on a project to outreach the homeless population in our Village. Statistics indicate that a vast majority of the homeless have untreated mental illness so the design of the project was to have a clinically trained therapist conduct initial assessments in the community and provide referrals to the Center where they could begin treatment for their illness and begin the process of recovery," said Rick Germann Executive Director of the Alexian Brothers for Mental Health. "A member of the Arlington Heights Police Department transported the therapist to community locations and ensured a safe environment."
"Working collaboratively has resulted in the ability of Police officers and professionals from Alexian Brothers to gain the trust of someone who is homeless and guide them toward resources that can immediately address their concerns. This teamwork has resulted in numerous success stories such as getting a suicidal homeless person back onto proper medication for a mental disorder for which they were diagnosed, and in helping a homeless individual meet with mental health practitioners and eventually move into a transitional living arrangement.
"This is wonderful recognition for our community and the partnerships the Village attempts to build in order to solve problems that arise," said Village Manager Bill Dixon. "This particular initiative improved situations faced by homeless individuals and also improves the lives of residents who have been affected by the inappropriate behavior sometimes exhibited by a homeless individual."
"The members of the Police Department gained valuable knowledge of the issues homeless individuals face on a daily basis as well as how to work with an individual experiencing symptoms of a mental illness in the community. The therapists learned about the value of meeting individuals where they are at in the community as well as the difficult task the officers face," added Germann.
