Arlington Heights Police Monitor Home Burglaries In Neighborhood, Provide Prevention Tips
Arlington Heights police have responded to three burglaries in the past four months in the Scarsdale and Scarsdale Estates neighborhoods. No determination has been made if the burglaries are related, and no arrests have been made.
In these burglaries, an unknown suspect(s) entered a home in December through an unlocked rear back door; entered into a home in February by breaking a window (the security alarm was not turned on at the time of the incident); and entered a home in March by forcing open the back door. The burglaries each took place between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and jewelry was taken from each location. Police have increased patrols in the area and have shared "Community Alert" information with residents to make them aware of steps that can be taken to keep their homes secure, and to be on alert of activities around their neighborhood.
Some interesting facts regarding burglaries are that 63 percent occur during the daylight hours and the most common entry into a home is through the front door. According to FBI statistics, the average loss is $2,091 per offense.
To help prevent your residence from being burglarized, consider these following tips:
Use exterior lighting: Automatic sensor lighting in front and motion detection lighting in back.
Use solid core exterior doors with double key deadbolt locks.
If a window is close to the door - keep the key a safe distance away.
Install a door viewer if the door is solid.
Sliding glass doors should have a burglar bar in the track.
Landscaping – bushes should be 3'or lower and trees should be trimmed 6' up.
Make sure alarm system is functioning properly.
Have several electronic devices on timers: lights, radio, television, etc.
Have a neighbor or friend collect your mail or newspapers.
Tell a trusted neighbor that you will be away so they can watch for suspicious activity.
In winter have your driveway shoveled.
For additional information on crime prevention or other community service programs, call Crime Prevention Officer Brandi Romag at 847-368-5330 or email her at bromag@vah.com. If you have any suspect information you believe is related to these incidents, please contact the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 847-368-5348.

Train Stopped: Metra Locomotive Fire Near Prospect Ave And Elmhurst Ave, Mount Prospect
Mount Prospect police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 1:24 PM Saturday to a report of a train on fire near "Jake's Pizza" at Prospect Avenue and Elmhurst Avenue Mount Prospect, IL. Police and firefighters received a report that a fire was visible under the train engine. Firefighters on scene located the train closer to Prospect Avenue and Elmhurst Avenue. Firefighters positioned on both sides of the track, and extinguished the fire within minutes.
From the street, no soot or burn damage was visible on the "Village of Bartlett" Metra F40PH locomotive #176. Passengers disembarked from the train onto gravel away from a regular boarding area. A Mount Prospect police officer and Metra conductors helped passengers off of the train.
Passengers either got rides from friends and family or waited until the next westbound train arrived.
No injuries were reported, but paramedics gave a man with a cane a ride back to the Mount Prospect train station.
Metra Outbound Train #705 was the affected train, which was reported by Metra on Twitter to have been "stopped near Mt. Prospect with a mechanical problem."
A passenger reported that the train suddenly lost power, and stopped. Initially , there was an onboard announcement that the train was experiencing a mechanical problem. Then there was an announcement that there was a fire in the engine.
A "rescue" locomotive arrived just about 3:00 p.m. and passed heading westbound for a railway switch -- possibly by Arthur Avenue in Arlington Heights. The switch put the rescue locomotive (the "Village of Chicago Ridge" Metra F40PH #144) eastbound on the same track as the stricken locomotive. The rescue locomotive also possibly waited for another scheduled westbound train to pass the scene. As soon as the rescue locomotive arrived, railroad workers coupled the rescue locomotive to the stricken locomotive and eventually pulled the train westbound about 4:00 p.m.

Attached Garage Fire Stopped In About 10 Minutes On South Boardwalk Ct In Palatine
Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:07 PM Friday to a report of a garage fire at 906 South Boardwalk Court Palatine, IL. Palatine firefighters received a report of an attached garage fire with all residents evacuated from the home. The first Palatine Fire Department crews arrived on the scene at 10:10 p.m. and reported smoke and fire in the attached garage of a two story house. The first fire companies entered the garage and extinguished the fire using a single attack hose line. Additional fire crews immediately checked the interior of the house and attic spaces for fire extension, which none was found. Fire damage was contained and limited to the garage and the three cars parked inside. The fire was declared under control at 10:20 p.m.
No civilians or firefighters were injured in the fire and the homeowners are able to stay in the house. Damage estimates are not available at the time of this release, and the fire remains under investigation by Palatine Fire Department investigators.
The fire was fought by 24 firefighters, staffing four engines, one ladder truck, one rescue squad and three ambulances which responded to the scene along and two Fire Investigators. Units from the Rolling Meadows Fire Department were among the initial responders to the scene as part of an automatic aid agreement. During the incident, a unit from the Long Grove Fire Department stood by in a Palatine fire station to provide coverage for any additional calls. Palatine Police officers assisted at the scene with traffic and crowd control.
The Palatine Fire Department reminds everyone to have working smoke detectors in their homes, whether a single-family dwelling, an apartment or a condo. Have an escape plan, practice it, and be prepared to use it in the event of any fire.

Rental Scam: Man Charged With Posing As Landlord Or Rental Agent To Receive Deposit Money With Fraudulent Leases
A 29-year-old man is facing felony charges after a Cook County Sheriff's Police investigation found that he took deposits from Polish immigrants for fake rental agreements, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said today.
Ronald Pierzowski, of Renton, Wash., was arrested March 14. He has been charged with criminal trespass to real property and theft by deception. His bond was set at $10,000 bond during a court appearance on Saturday.
According to the Sheriff's Police investigation, Pierzowski deliberately placed classified ads in a Polish language newspaper advertising apartments for rent.
Pierzowski posed as the property owner, landlord or as the agent of the property owner for a condominium in the 9900 block of Holly Lane in unincorporated Des Plaines. He did not own that property nor was he an agent for the property owner. From Feb.14 to Feb. 23, 2014, he showed that condominium to at least three people, presented them with fraudulent leases, and accepted more than $500 from each of the victims, as deposits.
Pierzowski's next scheduled court date is Thursday, March 20 at the Skokie Courthouse.
Detectives believe there may have been more victims. Sheriff Dart asks anyone who may have been a victim to call 708-865-4896.
Sheriff Dart also reminds the public that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the government in a court of law.
