Schaumburg Fatal Crash Described; Police Release Identity of Offending Hit-and-Run Driver in Prior Property Damage Crash on Springinsguth Rd
Schaumburg police have released the identity of the driver that caused a fatal crash while fleeing a property damage hit-and-run crash that occurred at Springinsguth Road and Dedham Lane.
Michael J. Owsiany, age 19, of Elk Grove Village, was fleeing southbound on Springinsguth Road in a blue 2009 Honda Civic when he hit a maroon 2006 Mitsibushi Galant at the south intersection of Springinsguth Road and Hartmann Drive.
The high-speed crash, which occurred at about 7:06 p.m., killed the driver of the Mitsubishi Galant at the scene. The driver of the Mitsubishi Galant was identified as Erin Semerad, age 39, of Schaumburg. She was making a left turn from eastbound Hartmann Drive to northbound Springinsguth Road. The intersection is at the crown of a small hill. Owsiany's Honda Civic was traveling at high speed up the small hill when it hit the Mitsubishi Galant primarily at the driver's side door.
Both vehicles traveled about 90 feet southbound along Springinsguth Road about 90 feet. The Galant was pushed to the parkway on the east side of Springinsguth Road. The Honda Civic spun 180 degrees and came to rest facing northbound in the southbound curb lane of Springinsguth Road.
Both vehicles received severe damage from the crash. The Honda received severe front-end damage. The Mitsubishi received severe driver's side damage. The B-post of the Mitsubishi appeared fractured at the roof from the crash, but may have been cut by a Hurst tool cutter during extrication. The cab or driver/passenger compartment received severe vehicle intrusion on the driver's side.
The southbound Honda may have been difficult to see or may have been difficult to judge regarding the rate of approach because the Honda was rising up a small hill in darkness. A witness reported the Honda traveling at high speed before the crash.
Sunset on Sunday October 26, 2015 was 5:53 p.m. to 5:56 p.m. Darkness covered the area by the time of the crash at 7:06 p.m. with civil twilight ending at 6:25 p.m.
Erin Semerad was pronounced dead at the scene from her traumatic injuries.
Owsiany was transported to Level I Trauma Center Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead.
Owsiany's passenger, Ashley E. Trenholm, age 23, of Schaumburg was also transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition Tuesday.
The crash prior to the fatal crash involved the driver of a 2011 Scion which was heading southbound on Springinsguth at 7:05 p.m. The driver of the Scion had slowed down to turn left onto Dedham Lane when the back of the vehicle was clipped by Owsiany's Honda. The Honda then fled the scene at high speed.
Investigators are working to determine the speed of Owsiany's vehicle prior to both crashes and at the time just before impact of the fatal crash. Sensors and event data recording in the Honda will hopefully provide engine speed, vehicle speed, brake status and other parameters.
Investigators will also determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
Schaumburg police are being assisted in the investigation of Monday's fatal crash by the Major Case Assistance Team (MCAT) Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team.
Ashley Trenholm, the surviving passenger in Owsiany's Honda Civic, was the driver in a DUI crash in October 2013 in downstate McClean County, Illinois. The crash caused cervical injuries that paralyzed her male passenger, Schaumburg resident Jesse Sternberg, who now uses a wheelchair.
Trenholm pleaded guilty to agggravated DUI after a 90 MPH crash on Interstate 74. According to Bloomington-based Pantagraph newspaper, the prosecuting attorney, Assistant State's Attorney Ashley Scarborough, requested a 10-year prison term for Trenholm -- reminding the court that Trenholm had a prior DUI arrest before the DUI crash on I-74.
Trenholm is scheduled to be sentenced for the aggravated DUI charge on Friday, October 30, 2015.
In another strange coincidence, Sunday's crash is the second serious crash at Springinsguth Road and Hartmann Drive in less than a month. Owsiany's Honda Civic came to rest near a house that was involved in a crash on a Sunday three weeks ago.
Monday's fatal crash occurred near a house on Springinsguth Road that was struck by a car about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, October 4, 2015. A 2013 Nissan Sentra crashed through a wall in the house on the west side of Springinsguth Road and ended up in the living room. The crash hit a gas line and caused a gas leak. The driver fled the scene on foot and has not been identified. No residents in the home were injured.
Schaumburg Fire Station 3 crews were first on the scene at both crashes.

Streamwood Man Arrested After Police Investigation of Backpage.com Listing Discovered Sex Trafficking of a Minor
A Streamwood man wanted for trafficking a 15-year-old girl for sex has been
arrested, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Saturday.
Derrick Hill, 41, was taken into custody on Oct.23 at his home by the Streamwood Police Department on a $1.5 million arrest warrant for involuntary sexual servitude of a minor. The warrant, issued on Oct. 7, stemmed from a Cook County Sheriff's Police Vice Unit investigation that began in January.
According to the Sheriff's Police Vice Unit investigation, Hill arranged "dates" on Backpage.com for the juvenile victim where she would perform sex acts for money, and Hill would profit from those "dates." The investigation found that Hill also rented the hotels rooms where these acts would occur.
Hill also was arrested for an outstanding traffic violation warrant.
Sheriff Dart acknowledged the Streamwood Police Department for their assistance in this case.
Sheriff Dart also reminds the public that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the Government in a court of law.

Driver Rescued After Pickup Truck Hits Large Utility Pole; Lines and Pole Drop on Truck on Rand Rd by Trader Joe's, Arlington Heights
Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 9:25 PM Wednesday to a report of crash with injuries in front of Trader Joe's, 17 West Rand Road Arlington Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a pickup truck hit a utility pole, and that the driver appeared injured in the truck.
Witness reported a transformer on a nearby pole was sparking, and power lines were down around the truck.
Firefighter/paramedics arrived on the scene and immediately requested ComEd to expedite to the scene for downed power lines on a pickup truck with a driver inside. Firefighter/paramedics also warned all other responding units to beware of the downed power line hazard. Firefighter/paramedics were not able to rescue the young male driver until there was confirmation that the power lines on the truck and the power lines surrounding the truck were de-energized.
The transformer was also down on the ground next to the vehicle after falling from the crash.
Firefighter/paramedics reported the driver was conscious. They reported that they had verbal contact with the driver and that they advised the driver to stay in the vehicle. Firefighter/paramedics confirmed that the driver understood the firefighter/paramedic's commands.
Firefighter/paramedics staged at a distance from the crash scene, and police evacuated the parking lot where customers and employees were leaving stores that had just closed.
ComEd arrived on the scene about 9:48 p.m. ComEd workers immediately went to work checking circuit breakers and apparently worked to de-energize the lines if necessary. One worker went up on a bucket and checked lines for current before giving firefighter/paramedics the go ahead to remove the patient from the pickup truck. Power was cut to the area, the area went dark, and firefighters/paramedics approached the vehicle with the gurney.
Firefighter/paramedics had patient contact with the driver about 10:16 p.m. and immediately transferred the patient from the vehicle to the ambulance. The driver was transported to Northwest Community Hospital.
The driver was not suspected of DUI. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
A power outage occurred in the immediate area. A high number of ComEd customers were not interrupted but experienced a short instant of flickering lights when the crash occurred.

Three-Hour Standoff on Geneva Drive, Palatine Ends Peacefully After NIPAS Special Teams Arrive
Palatine police responded about 10:30 AM Tuesday responded to a report of a man with a gun, 1300 North Geneva Drive Palatine, IL. Palatine police report criminal charges are expected against a 31-year-old man who barricaded himself, with a handgun, inside an apartment on the 1300 block of North Geneva Drive near Rand Road just west of Route 53 Tuesday.
A woman called 9-1-1 about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and told the Northwest Central Dispatch Systems dispatcher she had escaped from the apartment after being beaten by her boyfriend, who also had a gun, according to a Palatine Police Department news release. When police arrived, the man barricaded himself inside the apartment.
During negotiation with the man, police shut down Rand Road in both directions near the Windsor Court Condominium complex. The closure was a precaution for passing motorists that could otherwise be hit if stray gunfire occurred during the incident.
Palatine police negotiated with the man for more than three hours, then called the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS) for assistance. Shortly after a large number of police members from NIPAS special teams arrived, the man surrendered without incident.
Police recovered a loaded, .25-caliber semiautomatic handgun from the scene, according to Palatine police.
Police have not released the identity of the man, but reported he is a felon who has previously been deported.
The incident caused some delays in afternoon school bus arrivals in the area.
Rand Road was re-opened at 2:45 p.m. Westbound traffic was forced off at the frontage road just west of Route 53 and was backed up to about Hintz Road.

Car Fire Destroys Toyota Corolla on East Northwest Highway Near Chicago Swim School, Arlington Heights
Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:24 PM Monday to a car fire at 2012 East Northwest Highway Arlington Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a car was burning in the parking lot of the Chicago Swim School.
The driver heard a loud pop and then saw smoke coming out of her 2015 Toyota Corolla. Next flames were showing from under the hood and high winds fanned the fire. A witness reported the flames were about 20 feet or more in the air before the car fire was extinguished. The owner said there was no other warning that something was wrong except the loud pop immediately before the fire started.
Arlington Heights firefighters on Engine 2 extinguished the fire and used a good amount of water to cool off the car after the fire was extinguished to prevent a rekindle. Operations required a connection to a hydrant.
Heavy black smoke came out of the car when the interior started burning.
Arlington Heights Fire Deparment sent an investigator to the scene of the fire near the border between Arlington Heights and Mount Prospect.

TBS Mets Fan and Sport Commentator Casey Stern Drops Mother F Bomb on Open Mic After NLCS Game 1 Cubs @ Mets Game
As TBS was cutting to a commercial Saturday night after NLCS Game 1, an unknown announcer from the post game show could be heard on an open mic saying "Boom Mother F**king.
Twitter lit up with reaction and comments on the offensive statement on a prime time sports show for America's favorite past time.
One tweet said, "Anyone watching TBS just heard a mic slip. Either that or we're allowed to say "Mother F**king" on tv now."
Stern is a former executive recruiter turned sports commentator, and is also an avid New York Mets fan and hosts "Next Stop Shea" on Mets.com.
TBS has a history of bad sports announcing and bad coverage, including sports critics claims that TBS announcers are biased in favor of the National League over the American League, have a record of misidentifying players, technical difficulties causing missed game coverage, controllers missing key plays, bad camera placement, not having enough camera angles, and incorrect graphics. Cal Ripken, Jr. was once titled as "Carl Ripken, Jr, and Willie Mays name was once misspelled as Willie Mayes.
Currently the TBS network is not using the latest state of the art graphics from Statcast, which uses Trackman for Doppler radar and ChyronHego for high quality on screen 3D graphics.
The New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 4 -2 with excellent pitching by Matt Harvey.
