Man Lucky to Survive When Vehicle Becomes Submerged Salt Creek During Storm Near Arlington Park Racetrack, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 10:30 PM Friday to a report of a crash in the west Euclid Avenue driveway of Arlington Park racetrack at 42.089325, -88.017960 (2200 West Euclid Avenue Arlington Heights, IL). Police and firefighter/paramedics discovered that a sedan was swept into the water, but that the male driver was able to crawl out of the vehicle window and escape on his own.

A witness reported that a man drove south on the driveway on the west side of Arlington Park racetrack property to leave the property during heavy rain with obscured visibility. The male driver found that the gates had closed. He backed up and was making a three-point turn, pointing the back end of his sedan toward the Salt Creek that runs in the median of the boulevard type driveway.

Rapid water had risen, almost overflowing onto the driveway, and the rear wheels of the sedan sank into the bank of the Salt Creek. The rapid water then carried the sedan with the driver inside, floating about 250 feet or 83 yards south along the Salt Creek. The driver was able to get himself out a window of the vehicle and rescue himself to shore.

The driver was not injured.

Police and firefighter/paramedics arrived to find the man was already out of the vehicle. Because of the rapid water, and since there was no rescue; firefighter/paramedics decided to hold off on towing the vehicle out of the creek until the rapid waters calmed down.

The vehicle removal operations began Sunday morning about 9:45 a.m. Sunday. The vehicle was lifted out of the creek with a Hillside Heavy Rescue Tow Boom after Arlington Heights firefighters connected and secured the vehicle to the boom.

The driver was not charged with any crime, and there were no traffic citations issued.

Lake County Sheriff's Office Alerts Residents and Businesses to Take Precautions Against Flood Scams

The Lake County Sheriff's Office has posted a statement reminding Lake County residents of the increased risk of scammers attempting to capitalize on those impacted by flooding.

One of the recommendations of the sheriff's office is that residents take photographs of your contractor and any work vehicles. The Cardinal recommends you use discretion in capturing contractor images. You may decide to be straightforward with the contractor and make notification that you want to document the work for your insurance. Alternatively, you may want to use cellphone video or still shots in a way that you can secretly captured vehicle information, license plates, etc. with being confrontational.

The Lake County Sheriff's office posted the following on sheriff's office official Facebook page ...

Often, in times of natural disaster there is an increase in door-to-door criminals attempting to solicit fraudulent business. The Lake County Sheriff's Office and Lake County Emergency Operations Center have seen an increase in inquiries from the community who feel they may have fallen prey to one of these scams.

Some safety tips include:

• Check with the Better Business Bureau and your insurance company to determine the credibility of the service provider.

• Do not let anybody inside of your home, unless you have initiated the appointment.

• Obtain several (three or more) estimates for repair work.

• Take photographs of your contractor and any work vehicles.

• Before work begins, obtain a written contract.

• If you see or detect anything suspicious, contact your local law enforcement agency.

Sheriff Mark Curran said, "Scammers target the vulnerable and with the devastating impacts we've seen from the flooding, they will likely be out in force. Remember, check with your local village, township, or insurance company to verify the credibility of the service provider. Please pass this information along to any family or friends who have been impacted by the flooding."

Teen Driver Hits Garage Near Hawthorne St and Dunton Ave While Out Learning to Drive with Her Mom

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 3:13 PM Saturday to a report of a crash with into a garage at Hawthorne Street and Dunton Avenue Arlington Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a car crashed into a house, but the black SUV actually crashed into a detached garage at residential lot on the northwest corner of Dunton Avenue and Hawthorne Street.

Police said a 15-year-old female driver was learning how to drive with her mother Saturday afternoon. The teen driver was headed southbound on Dunton Avenue and made a right turn to head westbound on Hawthorne Street. She made a wide turn while driving the black SUV and discovered she was heading toward a pickup truck.

She overcompensated while steering right to avoid the pickup truck, jumped the curb on the north side of Hawthorne Street and crashed into the detached garage located behind a house in the block of 700 North Dunton Avenue.

No injuries were initially reported, but the female driver of the pickup truck was pregnant, and asked to be checked by paramedics.

Firefighter/paramedics responded with an extrication response, as they do when a vehicle strikes a building. A Battalion Chief, ambulance crew, squad crew, and engine company were on the scene for a short time.

The southeast corner of the detached garage was severely damaged, which prompted a request to have the on call building department inspector respond to check the structure.

Police said the teen girl, who did not yet have a license, was given citations.
