End Of Season Mandatory Jackpot Pick 9 Payout At Arlington International On Sunday, September 29, 2013

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Sept. 28, 2013) – Having not been solved since June 7, Arlington International Racecourse's JackPOT Pick 9 will have a mandatory distribution Sunday, closing day for the track's 2013 season. With a jackpot pool of $759,941 already in the coffers, the total pool for the wager is expected to be well into seven figures.

The JackPOT Pick 9 is a dime wager that requires a bettor to have the winners in the first nine races on a card but only pays out the jackpot pool if there is exactly one ticket with the winners in all nine of the Pick 9 races, otherwise half of that day's net pool is distributed to those ticket holders with the most winners with the rest added to the jackpot. However with the 2013 meet ending Sunday, the entire jackpot pool plus Sunday's net Pick 9 pool must be paid out.

The JackPOT Pick 9 begins on Sunday's first race. Post time at Arlington on Sunday is 1 p.m. Central time.

Local Police Continue Multi-Jurisditional Task Force To Investigate 1982 Tylenol Murders As Fbi Terminates As Lead Agency

As the 31st anniversary of the 1982 Tylenol murders approaches, the FBI has disbanded their task force, and a local multi-jurisdictional task force established in 2007 continues to investigate the Chicago area poisonings.

Since 2007, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been the coordinating agency for the task force. In that lead role, the FBI provided valuable resources to task force partners which include: the Illinois State Police, as well as the Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, Lombard, Schaumburg, Chicago and Winfield Police Departments. The FBI has now transferred coordination of the task force investigation to the agencies that have jurisdiction for the prosecution of the murders. Arlington Heights has volunteered, at least temporarily, to be the lead agency of the investigation. Three of the victims that were murdered, collapse in an Arlington Heights home.

The FBI will continue to provide resources in areas of expertise as needed to support the investigation. The investigation is ongoing and active. The task force is continuing to work with the Cook County and Du Page County State's Attorney's Offices' for a successful conclusion.

The victims of this product tampering case were Mary Kellerman, age 12, of Elk Grove Village; Adam Janus, age 27, of Arlington Heights; Stanley Janus, age 25 and Theresa Janus, age 19, both of Lisle; Mary Reiner, age 27, of Winfield; Mary McFarland, age 31, of Elmhurst; and Paula Prince, age 35, of Chicago. All seven were determined to have ingested cyanide laced Extra Strength Tylenol capsules on or shortly after September 29, 1982.

"I am not surprised the FBI is giving the case back to the local police departments, as they do not have jurisdiction on this case in the first place. I wonder what this means for us? Are the sealed documents able to be viewed now? After 31 years, we still do not have any answers. The topic of this case should never come up again in the news until closure can follow. And, sadly, with a majority of the evidence being destroyed immediately following the murders, I believe it is impossible at this point. I only hope the local police will bring new energy and light to the case to steer it in a new direction."

-- Michelle Rosen (daughter of murdered Tylenol/cyanide victim Mary "Lynn" Reiner)

According to Michelle Rosen, her mother, Mary Reiner had given birth 6 days prior to the time period when the Tylenol deaths were discovered. Rosen and investigator Scott Bartz believe May Lynn Reiner received the Tylenol that killed her from the hospital pharmacy at the hospital where she gave birth -- Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. Scott Bartz's, a former Johnson & Johnson employee who self-published the book THE TYLENOL MAFIA revealed the information to Rosen, which leads her to believe that her mother's exposure to Tylenol outside the retail channel is the "smoking gun" because she concluded the culprit presented by authorities could not have gained access to a secure hospital pharmacy.

Scott Bartz concludes that his research presented in the book THE TYLENOL MAFIA proves that the Tylenol tampering occurred within the distribution network for Tylenol, and that Johnson & Johnson, to avoid liability of corporate interests, would not want to be associated with the responsibility for distributing this Tylenol.

Potential evidence was destroyed when authorities ordered citizens across Chicagoland to destroy and dispose Tylenol to prevent any further fatalities from ingestion of contaminated Tylenol.

The September 28, 2013 Mystery
Bartz, writing in the opening chapter of THE TYLENOL MAFIA, describes a chilling incident that occurred on September 28, 1982 at 2:30 a.m., just before the Tylenol deaths were occurred. Two Kane County Sheriff's deputies discovered two light brown cardboard boxes in a Howard Johnson parking lot on Route 25 (Dundee Avenue) and Interstate 90 in Elgin.

On the boxes the words "EXTRA-STRENGTH TYLENOL CAPSULES" were embossed in bold black letters -- along with the manufacturer's name "McNEIL". One of the boxes was open. Two dozen Tylenol bottles remained in the open box, but two of those bottles were also open. Strewn on the pavement near the boxes were hundreds of red and white capsules parts labeled with the 500-milligram Extra Strength Tylenol dosage mark. A large pile of white powder that appeared to be dumped was also nearby. A couple of capsules looked like they had been put back together.

Suspecting this was the work of some drug dealers, both officers rubbed the powder between their fingers, and picked up some of the pieces. One of the officers suddenly became violently ill with vomiting, headache and dizziness -- all symptoms of cyanide poisoning. The second deputy also became dizzy and began to vomit.

The officers rushed away and became too sick to continue their shifts. They left the product in the lot. When authorities checked the parking lot, the product, powder and boxes were gone.

Oops, Extra Credit Science Project Brings Emergency Bomb Squad Response To Prospect High School, Mount Prospect

Concerned parents received an email that Prospect High School was under a soft lockdown this morning, but the email didn't say anything about what caused the precaution of putting the school under soft lock down.

Early this morning, a suspicious device was discovered outside on the east side of Prospect High School's campus. As a precaution, Prospect High School initiated a soft lockdown and contacted the Mount Prospect Police Department. Based on the initial assessment of the device, the Mount Prospect Police requested the Cook County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad respond to the scene. The Cook County Bomb Squad rendered the suspicious device safe and later determined the item posed no threat.

Law enforcement officials later determined the device was part of a classroom extra-credit science experiment after Mount Prospect Police officers located a second device in a vehicle in the school parking lot. The second device provided key indicators it did not pose a threat to the school community or the students. An interview with the owner of the car revealed the item to be an extra credit assignment. Based on the makeup of the second device, law enforcement officials determined it posed no threat to students or staff.

The police department and high school's response followed established protocols designed to ensure the safety of the students and staff. Law enforcement and administrators from District 214 coordinated the response to this incident with the safety and security of the students as the primary concerns.

Arlington Heights police provided mutual aid assistance to Mount Prospect Police Department. The soft lock down was canceled by 11:00 a.m.

Firefighters Investigate Possible Fire At Home North Chestnut Ave, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 8:48 PM Friday to smoke odor investigation or related incident in the block of 1700 North Chestunut Ave Arlington Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics responded for a possible fire at a house where no flames or smoke were seen. Firefighters checked a house with infrared cameras, and checked appliances.

Apparently no fire was detected at the house. About five hours later a large power failure hit the area after power line trouble occurred about ten blocks away at Thomas Street and Wilke Road at the border of Arlington Heights and Palatine. Residents appeared to be home at the time of the incident at 8:50 p.m..

No confirmation regarding whether the power failure at 2:00 a.m. Saturday might have followed a possible power surge at about 8:50 p.m. Friday.

Wide Area Power Outage Affects Hasbrook, Arlington Heights, Palatine

Palatine police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:00 AM Saturday to a report of a blown transformer and flash with power failure near Wilke Road and Thomas Street Palatine, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a large flash occurred on the west side of Arlington Heights near Thomas Street. Northwest Central Dispatch also received several calls of power-related problems in the area. Palatine Fire Department Tower 83 found the trouble on Thomas Street, just west of Wilke Road.

Power was interrupted for at least 1,300 ComEd customers -- mostly in the Hasbrook neighborhood of Arlington Heights.

The power outage started about 2:00 a.m. in an area approximately bordered by Thomas Street, Evergreen Avenue, Palatine Road, and a western border including street lights on Route 53. Some areas north of Palatine Road, west of Kennicott Avenue, and some areas south of Thomas Street on both sides of Wilke Road were also affected. Palatine Road and Kennicott Avenue traffic signals were dark with drivers traveling through the intersection without caution before Arlington Heights police arrived on the scene.

Estimated restoration was 4:00 a.m. and the cause of the problem was believed to be a fallen tree limb, according to ComEd's outage map.

ComEd was on the scene by 3:00 a.m. Saturday at Thomas Street and Wilke Road, just west of Wilke Road. The situation was corrected by 5:00 a.m. (likely earlier before the ComEd map was checked).

About 8:50 p.m. Arlington Heights firefighters were checking on a smoke odor investigation or some similar problem in the 1700 block of North Chestnut Avenue. Firefighters checked a house with a thermal image camera for hidden heat or fire. It is unknown if a power surge related to the subsequent power failure may caused the problem at the home on Chestnut Avenue. No confirmation on the exact problem that was reported by the homeowner or what was discovered by firefighters.

Arlington Heights Man Reported In Critical Condition With West Nile Virus Infection

9:40 AM Thursday ENTER ADDRESS. An early report developing is that an Arlington Heights man has tested positive with the mosquito-borne illness West Nile Virus. The man, in his 70s became ill Thursday, September 12, 2013 and was unresponsive by early Saturday morning. He was transferred from a general medical floor to an Intensive Care Unit for observation and life support at the same local hospital.

DEVELOPING ...

+++

Most people are infected by the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes can then spread the virus to humans and other animals.

The news from Arlington Heights comes just days after The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reported on September 16, 2013 the first death of a person with West Nile virus in northern Illinois for 2013. IDPH reported that the middle-aged man from suburban Cook County became ill with West Nile virus in late August and had died.

The Cook County man is the second West Nile virus related death in Illinois for 2013. IDPH reported the death of a Logan County resident last week.

"The first West Nile virus related deaths this year occurred later than we typically see," said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck. "Even with the cooler temperatures, until the first hard freeze, you still need to protect yourself against mosquito bites and possible West Nile virus infection."

To date, West Nile virus positive birds, mosquitoes and/or human cases have been reported in 59 counties. The first human case this year was reported on August 21st, in a McHenry County woman in her 50s. Last year the first death was reported in August.

For the 2012 season, IDPH reported the second highest number of West Nile virus human cases in state history with 290 residents and 12 deaths. So far this year, 10 human cases have been reported.

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. Common West Nile virus symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks. However, four out of five people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms. In rare cases, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur. People older than 50 are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.

The best way to prevent West Nile disease or any other mosquito-borne illness is to reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home and to take personal precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Precautions include practicing the three "R's" – reduce, repel and report.

REDUCE exposure - avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn.

- Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings. Try to keep doors and windows shut, especially at night.

- Eliminate all sources of standing water where mosquitoes can breed, including water in bird baths, ponds, flowerpots, wading pools, old tires and any other receptacles.

REPEL - when outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535, according to label instructions. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants.

REPORT - In communities where there are organized mosquito control programs, contact your municipal government to report dead birds and areas of stagnant water in roadside ditches, flooded yards and similar locations that may produce mosquitoes.
Additional information about West Nile virus can be found on the Illinois Department of Public Health's website at www.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/wnv.htm. Surveillance numbers are updated every Wednesday afternoon http://www.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/wnvsurveillance13.htm.
