Police and firefighter/paramedics received numerous calls related to weather when a record 4.19 inches of rain fell for October 14 at Chicago's official weather station at O'Hare International Airport. Heavier rain fell with amounts of 5-8 inches in Mendota, Plano, Naperville, Glen Ellyn, Downers Grove, Somonauk and the south side of Chicago. The Chicago Riverwalk was flooded Saturday, and remained flooded Sunday morning.
The official rain record beat the previous rain record for any day in October, which was recorded at 3.95 inches on October 3, 1954.
In Arlington Heights, police and firefighters responded to a report of two people stranded in a Pontiac Sunfire in rising flood water in the southbound lanes of Arlington Heights Road, just north of Burr Oak Drive.
There was also a report of other vehicles also stalling out nearby.
At least one northbound vehicle hit the water at high speed, causing a large wake, after emergency vehicles with emergency light flashing were in the area. That vehicle stalled out about 75 yards down the road.
Flooding was also reported on southbound lanes of Arlington Heights Road south of Hintz Road at Suffield Drive, Waterman Avenue south of Kensington Road, and Oakton Street and Yale Avenue -- across the intersection.
Stranded motorists were also reported on Rolhwing Road near Harvest Bible Church in Rolling Meadows, and Highland Boulevard and Jones Road in Hoffman Estates. In Lake Forest people needed rescue from the roof of their vehicle on Deerpath Road under US 41.
Arlington Heights also responded to at least one flooded basement with an electrical hazard, and a flooded below-grade garage with 5 feet of water filling the garage.
In the block of 2600 North Drury Lane firefighters responded to a report of a house struck by lightning followed by a hissing sound and the smell of natural gas. Firefighters discovered a gas leak, shut down the gas leak and ventilated the house. Initially firefighters did not find any evidence of a lightning strike.
A lightning strike of a house on Newhaven Drive in Hawthorn Woods knocked down part of a chimney and started an attic fire about 7:06 p.m. Saturday. The exterior fire was extinguished by 7:20 p.m. A man was initially reported to be possibly injured by falling objects from the chimney before the fire was discovered. Lake Zurich Fire later reported there were no injuries at the fire scene.
A possible lightning strike or water-related short circuit started a small fire in the soffit area of a garage near the front of a house on Whispering Oak Drive in Buffalo Grove about 8:15 p.m. Saturday. Firefighters had to chase smoke in the attic to find the area that was burning. The small fire was extinguished by 8:44 p.m.
Over 250 flights were canceled at O'Hare and 37 flights were canceled at Midway on Saturday October 14, 2017.

Deceptive Buyer Changes Envelope During Rolex Watch Transaction to Short the Purchase Amount for the Victim
Arlington Heights police received a report about 7:31 PM Saturday of a theft at a transaction meeting place at Dunkin' Donuts, 1010 East Rand Road Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that an unknown offender/buyer met with a victim/seller to buy a certified pre-owned Rolex Datejust 36mm watch, valued at $3,800.
The victim/seller counted the money for the watch. The money was contained in an envelope, but the offender/buyer asked for the envelope back so he could seal it for the seller/victim. The offender "sealed" the envelope, returned the envelope to the seller/victim and asked the seller/victim to keep the envelope sealed until the offender/buyer could verify the authenticity of the watch.
The victim and offender parted ways, but when the seller/victim got home, he opened the envelope and realized that it did not contain the same amount of money.
Apparently the envelope was switched by the offender/buyer, when he pretended to take the envelope in order to seal the envelope.
Arlington Heights police did not mention how the victim and offender were introduced to each other before they met.
The crime is reported to have occurred on Saturday, September 30, 2017 between 7:00 PM and 7:30 PM. The elapsed time range including the time the crime could have occurred is 0:30 (hours: minutes).
