Suspicious Device Placed on Manhole Looked Like Pipe Bomb at McLean Blvd Near Kane St, South Elgin

South Elgin police responded about 7:20 p.m. Monday to McLean Boulevard near Kane Street north of Spring street Monday night as police and fire crews responded to a call about an object near a strip mall that resembled a pipe bomb. The suspicious item was discovered to be a foot-long piece of PVC pipe painted black with both ends capped. The device was found on a manhole cover. An Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) agent used a bomb-sniffing K-9, but the dog did not indicate that it sniffed explosives on the device. The Kane County Bomb Squad used a water disrupter to destroy the device. Water disruptors use a water-projectile shaped charge to destroy bombs, which blasts the device apart and severs any detonating connections faster than any fuse or anti-tampering device on the bomb can react by explosion. Police searched the area for other devices and canvassed the area as part of the investigation. Read complete article on Arlingtoncardinal.com ... http://www.arling

Dryden Place Neighborhood Near Kensington Rd Showing Warning Signs of Developing Urban Decay

The Village of Arlington Heights has a good record of regulating excellent properties in the village limits. A quick look at the property north of Kensington Road -- Marketview Apartments commonly called Dryden Place apartments -- shows driveways and a parking lot affected by deep potholes. Many of the potholes are deeper than six inches -- capable of breaking an ankle and wrecking vehicle suspension systems. Mansard roofing appears in disrepair, and garbage in the rear is frequently overflowing dumpsters a

Saturday Storms: Cloud Rotation, Lightning Strike House Fire, Tree Down in Arlington Heights

Most severe weather Saturday occurred in McHenry County and Lake County, where a funnel or tornado or cloud rotation was spotted near Route 14 and Oak Grove Road near Harvard at about 2:19 p.m. Numerous downed power lines were reported across McHenry County and Lake County. The largest number of customers without power were located east of I-94. At a home in Mundelein on the 1600 block of Verde Lane, lightning is believed to have caused an attic fire. Firefighters responded to the home at about 3:30 p.m. and elevated the response to a MABAS Box "Change of Quarters" at about 3:51 p.m. and a full MABAS Box Alarm at 3:59 p.m. The MABAS Box Alarm was struck out at about 4:36 p.m. after the fire was extinguished by about 4:20 p.m. Firefighter/paramedics from Arlington Heights, Deerfield, Buffalo Grove,

TORNADO WATCH; Storm Forecast Assessment for Chicagoland, Heat Index Fizzled

Today was a battle between a cool lake outflow boundary pushing cool air southwest vs. a push of warm Gulf air sucked up from the counterclockwise rotation of a Low Pressure System to the southwest over central Kansas, and a clockwise push of warm air from the south where a High Pressure System was over southwest Tennessee. As has been common this summer and last summer, the cold outflow boundary from Lake Michigan pushed cooler air into the area. The clash caused unstable air that mixed with moist air that measured dew points as high as 76°F at O'Hare, and as high as 79°F in Kankakee, and as high as 82°F in Streator. The most severe weather today occurred in McHenry County and Lake County, where a funnel or tornado was spotted near Route 14 and Oak Grove Road near Harvard at about 2:19 p.m. No significant thunderstorms were visible on radar at 5:45 p.m., but heating with clear skies could create conditions for severe thunderstorms to return Saturday evening.
