A temporary road closure is planned by Union Pacific at the railroad crossing on Walnut Avenue to Ridge Avenue in Arlington Heights from Monday, October 5 to October 19. The closure is necessary in order to ensure continued safety along the Metra Union Pacific Northwest line.
A traffic control plan will be in place to re-direct vehicles on a detour route. The Village of Arlington Heights has provided a closure and detour map of the area for the period of the railroad crossing.
The alternate route(s) for the closure involve Wing Street, Campbell Street and Vail Avenue.

Gurnee Homicide Suspect from Pacific Ave Murder Arrested After Traffic Stop Near Gurnee Police
Gurnee police arrested homicide suspect David M. Brocksom, 43, of Kenosha, Wisconsin during a traffic stop at about 7:45 p.m. Sunday.
Police recognized Brocksom driving towards the Gurnee Police Department parking lot when a police officer initiated a traffic stop. Police did not say whether they believed Brocksom was about to turn himself in to police.
About 9:25 a.m. Sunday September 27 2015, police and paramedics responded to reports of an injured person on Pacific Ave near Magnolia Avenue in Gurnee.
Police arrived at the house to find a female victim deceased. The victim is believed to be Brocksom's wife, however, police have not confirmed whether they were husband and wife, but neighbors did report that the couple was married but separated and undergoing a divorce.

Police from Buffalo Grove, Prospect Heights and Arlington Heights assisted Wheeling police officers establishing crime scene perimeters and working crowd control.
A witness at the scene reported that there was some type of fight where a man may have been stabbed in the arm inside and apartment. The offender arrived in a pickup truck, and apparently went inside and stabbed a male victim. The offender returned to his pickup truck, where a man retaliated for the stabbing. After the retaliation, another witness said it looked like the man in the pickup truck was dead. A witness reported there was a lot of blood on the pickup truck on the driver's side. It was unknown if the blood was from the victim's stabbed arm, the offender, or both. A witness reported the offender took a good beating.
Police were searching for evidence south of the apartment building where the pickup truck was parked, and north of the apartment building in a grassy area.
Wheeling police shut down the crime scene about midnight. No Major Case Assistance Team personal appeared to be at the scene, so apparently no homicide occurred,

The fire was declared under control and about 10:54 p.m. the 2-11 Alarm fire was struck out. A child, believed to be about 12-years-old, was found dead after a crew went back inside with the fire mostly extinguished.
Three or four people were initially transported to area hospitals, then another four people were transported to St Bernard Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital.
Among the patients evaluated by paramedics, two infants were transported to St Bernard Hospital. As firefighters were cleaning up the scene and picking up equipment, two additional people required transportation to a hospital. They were transported to Holy Cross Hospital about 12:55 a.m.

The Ford Fusion spun 180 degrees after it was hit and received damage that extended up the driver's side rear roof post. The 2003 Jeep Cherokee had very little damage.
The Ford Fusion was a ServiceMaster fleet car, that was possibly going to be totaled because of the crash.
The driver of the Jeep Cherokee was ticketed by Arlington Heights police for failure to obey the stop sign.
For years two stop signs have controlled Pine Avenue at the intersection in the Recreation Park neighborhood. In early August, the Village Board of Arlington Heights approved the installation of 10 entirely new stop signs at five previously uncontrolled intersections nearby in the Recreation Park neighborhood.
The neighborhood now includes a new zone of stop sign configuration that is bordered by Arlington Heights Road, Haddow Avenue, Euclid Avenue and Miner Street. All twenty intersections are regulated to help prevent crashes and to control any single street from being traveled at higher speeds without any stops. Monday, the driver of the Jeep Cherokee that was ticketed claimed she had stopped, but then moved into the intersection without seeing the other vehicle. The driver of the Ford Fusion, which was hit in the rear, claimed the driver of the Cherokee never stopped.

District 23 Teachers and Support Staff Reject Best and Final Offer from School Board
Today, striking teachers in Prospect Heights District 23 -- the Prospect Heights Education Association -- have rejected the school board "best and final" offer.
Teachers are meeting with the school district tonight at 6:00 p.m.
Union President Bob Miller said the vote, taken by the 150 teachers Thursday morning, was rejected by an "overwhelming" margin, but did not give specific numbers.
"It was a very emotional meeting," Miller wrote. "Every (Prospect Heights Educational Association) member wants to get back to school with our students. However, the offer was inadequate in meeting our primary goals."
Miller said the board's offer does not do enough to move committee work outside of the school day, which he says means teachers are pulled out of the classroom too often. The offer also caps educational advancement and limits what educators can make for getting advanced degrees.
Miller has said that the teachers are concerned about low salaries compared to other neighboring school districts. Miller said the board's financial offer was "closer to an acceptable settlement" but he said it is still "inadequate in closing the wage gap with surrounding districts."
The Prospect Heights Education Association website reports that the District 23 has the lowest maximum salary of $90,000 compared to District 25 (Arlington Heights) at $107,263 and District 34 (Glenview) at $117,824.
The teachers are also concerned about low teacher retention of only 80 percent.
School board President Mari-Lynn Peters said Wednesday night that the board was done negotiating and that she was unsure what would happen if the union did not accept this final offer.
"We continue to say to this Board, we are willing to meet, we are ready to meet, even in a public forum. We want to put this behind us and get kids back in the classroom. But, we need the Board to negotiate with a commitment to a fair settlement without preconditions," Miller said.
The District 23 teachers and educational support staff strike covered by the collective bargaining began September 16, 2015.

Stagnant Air Overnight and Natural Gas Odor Calls at Miner St and Belmont Ave, Arlington Heights Rd and Maude Ave
Arlington Heights firefighters were called to two locations early this morning for reports of natural gas odor in the area.
Firefighters were called to a location near Arlington Heights Road and Maude Avenue and to the area of the Recreation Park tennis courts near Belmont Avenue.
Firefighters did not detect a gas leak at either location.
Winds have been less than 5 MPH or calm since 1:00 a.m., which may have allowed air to stagnate at ground level. The humidity overnight has also been 78% to 90% since 1:00 a.m. High humidity enhances the sense of smell.
Minor gas leaks may be easier to detect.
Also crack sealing work is ongoing in Arlington Heights this month. The material emits an odor that could possibly be mistaken for a natural gas odor -- especially at a distance.

Hey 9-1-1, You Lose a Radio? Hello? Man Turns in Emergency Fire Radio Found at Dempster St and Busse Rd, Mount Prospect
A man found a radio, apparently this morning, near Dempster Street and Busse Road in Mount Prospect.
He said he heard it "talking" and saw it in the street on Dempster Street. He took it home and pressed the transmit button and asked if someone lost a radio.
About 6:30 a.m. he transmitted on the fire emergency channel for Des Plaines Fire Department, and the dispatch center replied. The man was nice enough to secure the radio for the firefighters, but told dispatchers he had to go to work.
He asked if it would be OK if he would give it to them when he comes home from work at 6:30 p.m.
That's when the dispatcher said he would send the police over to pick up the radio. Unfortunately, there was somewhat of a language barrier, and it was difficult to understand the street name.
Eventually the street name was understood and Mount Prospect police rushed over to pick up the radio, which apparently belonged to the crew on Des Plaines Tower Ladder 63. The Mount Prospect police officer met with Tower Ladder 63's crew about 7:05 a.m., and gave them the radio he retrieved from an apartment at the Mansard Lane Apartments, just south of Dempster Street.
Considering this area of Mount Prospect has an abundance of gang crime activity, the fire department was lucky to benefit from the good deed done by a good citizen.

Apple iCloud Monthly Storage: Free 5 GB Stingy, 50 GB for 99 Cents a Good Deal
Apple has finally set iCloud at a more reasonable level with competing services such as Google Drive and Dropbox, both competing services which offer around 1TB of storage for around $10 a month.
Microsoft's OneDrive at only $6.99, is still cheaper at the 1TB level.
At $6.99 a month it also comes bundled with a Microsoft Office 365 subscription.
If you save a lot of photos via backup to iCloud, or even one or two videos, you will use up your free 5GB very quickly. The free 5GB is very stingy on Apple's part. Google offers 15 GB of free online storage, and a user doesn't even have to own one of their Android OS devices. You can also set up multiple accounts without any connection to a cellphone.
Apple doesn't even reward users for having multiple devices. If you want to share an iCloud account with an iPhone and and iPad, you still only get a stingy 5GB total for both devices -- hardly even usable. Keep in mind, if you save a lot of emails, those also take up space on iCloud storage -- especially if the emails have attachments.
The 50 GB storage at 99 cents a month is a good deal
