Village Of Arlington Heights Senior Citizens Commission Seeks Nominees For Kenneth Hood Senior Service Award

The Village of Arlington Heights Senior Citizens Commission is seeking nominations for the seventh annual Kenneth Hood Senior Service Award. The award nomination forms are available on the Village of Arlington Heights website: http://www.vah.com, or by calling 1-847-253-5532. The deadline for submission for 2014 consideration is June 1st.

Prior recipients of the Kenneth Hood Senior Service Award include: John W. (Jack) Muldoon, 2013; Jack Hanahan, 2012; Joe Cesario, 2011; Frank De Rosa, 2010; and Shirley Garrison, 2009 as well as Jack Schimpf, 2008, honored posthumously. Future nominees should exhibit a history of excellent service to the senior community, have developed or conducted programs that enhance the quality of life for senior citizens, have embraced or nurtured activities that affect, in a positive way, the lives of the senior citizens population. They must serve as an example by continuing their efforts toward these goals with a zest for the joy of living. Candidates must reside, work or volunteer in the Village of Arlington Heights

Ken Hood's senior citizen advocacy included delivering meals on wheels for the Senior Center and serving as a member of the Park Place Advisory Council, and later as its president. He was one of the founding members of Arlington Heights Senior Center, Inc., and served as the Inc. president. For these and other activities, Ken received the Sid Granet Award which was bestowed upon him at the Governor's Conference on Aging. He served on the Senior Citizens Commission for more than twenty years, and of course, became its chairperson. He wrote a book about his beloved wife, Lois and celebrated his 100th birthday. Twice again, he found himself in the spotlight, as a centenarian and as a powerful advocate for the dignity of Alzheimer's patients when the article "For the Love of Lois" appeared.

Dr. Kenneth Hood was born on a farm in western Pennsylvania and attended a one room school house. He graduated from New Castle High School and received his BS in Agricultural Economics from Penn State. He received a Ph.D. from Cornell University and worked for the American Farm Bureau as an economist and marketing specialist and was a published author. Ken's career included extensive writing, the lecture circuit and teaching. He was active for decades in the Arlington Heights Noon Rotary Club and served as the secretary for several terms.

Ken Hood accomplished all he had set out to do, including flipping the switch to light the decorations at North Park to kick off the 2006 holiday season. At his 100th birthday party, Ken charged those present to pick up his torch of service to Arlington Heights Senior Citizens. It is in this spirit that the Dr. Kenneth Hood Award was created in 2008. The Senior Citizens Commission will announce the winner on July 31st, Dr. Hood's birthday.

Cannabis Arrests After Suspicious Persons Call At Motel 6, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police responded on Saturday to a report of suspicious males congregating outside near the Motel 6, 441 West Algonquin Road Arlington Heights, IL. The suspicious persons call resulted in three Cannabis possession arrests.

Police arrested Marcos Arias, age 20, of the 600 block of Carroll Square, Elk Grove Village, and Felix Cruz-Reyes, age 19, of the 500 block of Touhy, Des Plaines.

Police officers who arrived on the scene detected the odor of Cannabis in the air. A consensual search of Arias discovered a small amount of Cannabis in his front pocket. Cruz had Cannabis folded up in a magazine he was holding.

Both subjects were charged on local ordinance, and released on personal recognizance.

Their court dates are June 2, 2014.

Additional police officers that arrived on the scene also saw Bryan Abarca, age 20, of the 7500 block North Elmhurst Road Des Plaines, walking away from the area. Abarca admitted to having "weed" in his pants pocket. He resisted police as they attempted to search him.

His search was eventually completed and he was found with an excess of 2.5 grams of Cannabis.

He was released after posting $150 cash bond. His court date is May 15, 2014.

Teen Shot With Airsoft Gun On Thomas St Near Walnut Ave, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police responded about 9:26 PM Saturday to report of a teen hit by an Airsoft projectile in the block of 500 West Thomas Street Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report that a 13-year-old male victim was hit in the back with an Airsoft gun.

The victim and a friend were playing in front of the friend's parent's house. The victim and his friend noticed a dark-colored SUV fleeing the area westbound on Thomas Street after the victim was struck with a projectile. The dark SUV had a variety of stickers on the back windows.

The crime is reported to have occurred Saturday about 9:25 p.m.

The offense is considered a simple battery.

The victim's family declined medical attention, but the victim did sustain a welt or bruise-like injury to his back.

A typical Airsoft gun has a range of about 120 to 180 feet, but some can be modified to reach about 300 feet.

Participants that use Airsoft guns in sport are required to wear impact-rated googles or safety glasses to protect their eyes. Full face protection gear is also available. Regular sunglasses or glasses can shatter when hit by a projectile and cause eye injuries. A direct hit to the eye without eye protection can also cause eye injuries.

In a study in France, most eye injuries were corneal abrasion, hyphema or blood in the anterior chamber of the eye which can result in permanent visual impairment, and iris trauma. The iris is the eye color part of the eye that controls pupil diameter. Trauma to the iris can cause pain, pain from light exposure, floaters, which usually occur within three days of the injury.

In the French study 50 percent of victims has long term problems and 33 percent of victims required surgical intervention.

Multiple sources report that Airsoft handguns are not accurate more that about 50 feet, while Airsoft rifles are not accurate more than about 100 feet.

Airsoft guns in the United States are generally sold with a 6mm (0.24in.) or longer orange tip on the barrel to distinguish them from real lethal firearms. Of course, a criminal could put an orange tip on a real firearm to deceive victims.

Arlington Heights police urge any citizen with information about this incident to call 9-1-1 or to call the non-emergency police telephone number 847-368-5300.

Vendor offerings will include fresh produce, plants, vegetables, meats (including Bison), olives, eggs, breads, pastries, herbs, flowers, cheese, jellies and honey. A vendor that provides knife sharpening services also will be at the market.

Founder and manager of the market, Claudia Starck, generously offered the operation of the market to the Historical Society. Claudia single-handedly ran the market for 14 years as a gift to the community. She has now made another gift to her village by giving it to the Historical Society to generate funds to manage the collections and programs at the museum and at the same time, offering high quality, nutritious food source to our community.

The Farmers Market is an ever changing experience as new produce becomes available throughout the growing season and new events are planned through the year. Check out vendors and events at the new website, AHFarmersMarket.com. For more information about the Farmers Market, call the Museum at 847-255-1225.

Multiple Illinois Champ La Tia Back In Action May 4, Opening Weekend At Arlington International

Hernandez Racing Club's multiple Illinois-bred champion La Tia is hoping to make her

2014 debut on opening weekend at Arlington International Racecourse. The daughter of City

Place is to be entered by conditioner Armando De La Cerda in an allowance optional claiming

event carded on Sunday, May 4 over 1 1/16-miles on the Arlington Polytrack.

In 2013, the dark bay filly won two of her four races at the Arlington Heights oval – all

on grass – including the Lincoln Heritage Handicap en route to being crowned both Champion

Older Handicap Female and Female Turf Horse in Illinois. Additionally, she finished a strong

third in the Grade III Modesty Handicap and a good fifth – missing third in a three-horse photo –

in the Grade I Beverly D. After a subpar third in a restricted stakes in October, De La Cerda

gave the filly some time off for the winter.

"She spent a couple months on the farm, but she really didn't really like it. She came

back a little skinny. Some horses don't like it away from the track," De La Cerda reported.

"But, I got her back and jogged her nice and slow for a month and have worked her a few times.

She's nice and happy, now. She went six furlongs last week in 1:13."

La Tia may also find happiness in a return to Arlington's synthetic main course. In 2012,

she raced over Polytrack five times – four times at Arlington – winning three stakes, including

the Grade III Arlington Oaks at nine furlongs. "She loves the Poly just as much as the turf; I

think she'll run good," her conditioner concluded. If all goes well, De La Cerda may consider

the Grade III Arlington Matron at the same course and distance as her Oaks win on May 24.
