Teen Possessing Gun With Defaced Serial Number Arrested Near Cottonwood Ln And Linneman Rd, Mount Prospect
A Mount Prospect police investigated two male subjects about 12:52 AM Sunday near Cottonwood Lane and Linneman Road Mount Prospect, IL. The police officer recognized one of the subjects as a 17-year-old juvenile of Mount Prospect who is a self-admitted gang member. When the officer attempted to make contact with the subjects, they both ran away from the officer. A short time later, the 17-year-old juvenile was located in the area of Cottonwood Lane and Busse Road. A search of the juvenile resulted in the recovery of a semi-automatic handgun from the juvenile's pocket. The gun that was discovered with the serial number defaced.
"The arrest of this juvenile with a firearm is a prime example of the department's efforts to address the issue of gangs in the community. The alert and proactive actions of the officers in this case removed a gang member from the streets and very likely prevented a violent crime from occurring somewhere in the northwest suburbs."
-- Mount Prospect Police Chief Tim Janowick
The juvenile was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and transported to the Cook County Juvenile Detention Facility, and will appear in juvenile court.
The Mount Prospect Police Department reminds the public that criminal charges are not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Mount Prospect Arrest 2 Suspected Of Firing Shots To Intimidate Rival Gang Members On Canford Cliffs Rd Near Busse Rd And Dempster St
Mount Prospect police responded about 6:23 AM Wednesday to a report of shots fired in the block of 1500 S Canford Cliffs Road Mount Prospect, IL. Police received a report that witnesses saw two male subjects running through the parking lot and getting into a silver colored vehicle immediately after the gun shots were heard. The witnesses reported the silver vehicle fled the parking lot northbound on Busse Road. Responding officers located a silver vehicle matching the description, given by witnesses, in the immediate area and stopped the vehicle. The occupants of the vehicle were interviewed and they were determined to be involved in the incident.
During the course of the investigation, officers were able to determine two of the occupants of the vehicle, Juan Ibarra and Ivan Avila, unlawfully and recklessly discharged a firearm into the air in the 1500 block of Canford Cliffs Road with the intention to intimidate rival gang members in the area. Officers recovered the firearm used by Ibarra and Avila. At this time, there have been no injuries or damage to property reported as a result of this incident.
"The officers did an outstanding job responding to this call of shots fired. The coordinated efforts of the patrol officers and investigators in this incident and several other incidents involving firearms recently have led to the successful arrest of several known gang members."
-- Tim Janowick, Mount Prospect Police Chief
Ibarra and Avila both were subsequently charged and taken to a bond hearing at the Circuit Court of Cook County on January 25, 2015. Juan Ibarra's bond was set at $40,000.00 "D" and Ivan Avila's bond was set at $20,000.00 "D".
Mount Prospect police remind the public that criminal charges are not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Apartment Space Heater Fire On Chariot Court, Mount Prospect
Mount Prospect police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 3:32 PM Saturday to a report of an apartment fire at 1721 Chariot Court Mount Prospect, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a heater was on fire in the apartment. The address was later corrected to 1721 Chariot Court.
Mount Prospect police on the scene reported smoke showing from the top of the building. First fire crews on the scene reported medium brown smoke showing from the third floor by 11:15 a.m.
The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes and was declared "fire out" on the radio at about 11:45 a.m.
Firefighters from Arlington Heights and Des Plaines assisted Mount Prospect firefighters.
Firefighters determined a malfunctioning space heater caused the fire.
On their official Twitter account, Mount Prospect Fire Department reminded people of safety recommendations for general heating and for using space heaters from the National Fire Protection Association:
Heating equipment is a leading cause of home fire deaths. Half of home heating equipment fires are reported during the months of December, January, and February. Some simple steps can prevent most heating-related fires from happening.
Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater.
Have a three-foot "kid-free zone" around open fires and space heaters.
+ + +
Space heater specific ...
Plug them directly into an outlet, don't use extension cords
use space heaters only in well-ventilated areas and at least three feet from curtains, clothing or furniture;
look for a space heater equipped with a guard around the heat source to keep children and pets safe.
+ + +
Never use your oven to heat your home.
Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer's instructions.
Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.
Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.
Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room.
Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
Test smoke alarms monthly.

Firefighters Inspect Chimney And Attic Of Home After "Fire Showing On The Roof" On Dunton Ave, Arlington Heights
Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 6:48 PM Sunday to a report of a roof on fire in the block of 600 North Dunton Avenue Arlington Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a roof was on fire. First firefighters on the scene reported nothing showing.
By the time firefighters arrived no flames were showing. The flames were apparently coming from the chimney.
Firefighters inspected the roof and interior attic space and found no signs of fire. Firefighters also used a thermal imaging camera and found no signs of fire or abnormal heat. Recent snow that was on the roof was not melted, which indicated no abnormal heat was in the attic.
The fire or embers were apparently visible before the firefighters arrived.
There was no confirmation from firefighters on the scene, but creosote, which can build up inside the chimney, is highly combustible.
Some slow-burning chimney fires don't get enough air to show highly visible fire that can occur in other rapidly burning chimney fires, which can quickly ignite the roof and attic. However, the temperatures of slow-burning chimney fires are still very high and can cause damage to the chimney structure and can eventually extend to combustible parts of the house.
Certain conditions accelerate the buildup of creosote, including restricted air supply, burning of unseasoned wood and, and cooler than normal chimney temperatures.
Hazardous air supply restriction can be caused by keeping fireplace glass doors closed while there is a fire in the fireplace, and by failing to open the damper wide enough. These situation can slow the rate that heated smoke moves up the chimney. The longer smoke hangs in the chimney, the more likely that creosote build up inside the chimney occurs.
Slow chimney fires can crack and damage part of the masonry and mortar, which can expose fire or intense heat directly to the wood frame of a house.
Firefighters at the scene were not yet able to confirm the cause of the fire.

Cold Weather Takes Toll On Harry's Of Arlington And Downtown Arlington Heights Streets This Weekend, Arlington Heights
Arlington Heights Public Works responded about 6:30 PM Saturday to a water main break at Dunton Avenue and Sigwalts Street Arlington Heights, IL. Water flooded the intersection of Sigwalt Street and Dunton Avenue, along Dunton Avenue north of Sigwalt Street, and the Evergreen Center shopping center just east of Dunton Avenue and north of Sigwalt Street.
The large area of the ground at the northwest corner of Dunton Avenue and Sigwalt Street was torn up to repair the 10-inch water main break. A section of streets was temporarily blocked while the frozen water flow obstructed traffic. Some sidewalks are still blocked in the area.
Air temperature ranged from 3°F to -2°F while public works crews worked to repair the water main break. The wind chill was as low as -8°F.
The cold weather also took its toll on Harry's of Arlington at 1 North Vail Avenue at the northeast corner of Vail Avenue and Campbell Street. Apparently frozen and burst pipes caused water damage, which caused the restaurant to close for the weekend. While ServiceMaster was working with tall ladders and salvage supplies inside the restaurant, a sign posted on the front door stated Harry's would be closed for the next few days due to water damage.
Harry's is normally open 11:30 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays, and 11:30 a.m. to midnight on Sundays.
