Emergency Hazmat, Cleanup Operation at McDonald Creek, Lake Arlington Near Palatine Rd and Windsor Dr, Impromptu Earth Day Work

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 5:43 AM Tuesday to a report of gasoline flowing at the Citgo Station at Palatine Road and Windsor Drive Arlington Heights, IL. An extended operation to cleanup spilled gasoline in a waterway involved a Hazmat Level I operation at the Citgo gas station, McDonald Creek and Lake Arlington most of the day Tuesday.

Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report early Tuesday that gasoline was "flowing all over the place" and flowing into the street. Firefighters responded with a HazMat Level I response.

A passerby hit the "kill switch" before firefighters arrived, but firefighters were still working on stopping the flow at about 6:00 a.m.

The gasoline flow was apparently occurring for an unknown amount of time, and possibly hundreds of gallons of gasoline leaked onto the ground with an unknown amount entering the storm sewer.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago was requested to respond to the scene by about 6:00 a.m.

Since the gasoline flowed into a storm sewer and then into McDonald Creek, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency responded to assess and oversee cleanup.

Firefighter/paramedics and public works staff immediately went to work to stop the flow of gasoline along the surface of water in McDonald Creek which streams toward Lake Arlington from Palatine Road, just west of Windsor Drive.

IDOT was also on the scene to offer assistance, including providing a map of their storm sewers in the area.

Arlington Heights Public Works staff put a plan into effect with special dikes or booms that block and absorb gasoline to prevent it from moving downstream. A gasoline sheen was visible in McDonald Creek, but was mostly or completely stopped just west of Windsor Drive about 1300 feet north of Palatine Road.

With strong west winds, the smell of the leaked gasoline was very strong east of the Citgo gas station and along Windsor Drive and near McDonald Creek.

A private contractor was hired for cleanup of the gas station site.

Arlington Heights Public Works staff also used absorbent booms at the outlet of Lake Arlington as a precaution to prevent further progression of any possible gasoline east of Lake Arlington in McDonald Creek.

The State of Illinois Fire Marshal was also on the scene to inspect and assess the incident. Officials are investigating the cause of the leak.

VIDEO: Luxury Mansion Destroyed by Fire on Rolling Hills Dr, Barrington Hills

Police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 2:38 p.m. Saturday to a house fire at 24 Rolling Hills Drive. The neighborhood has no fire hydrants.

A neighbor reported that the residents that lived at the house -- believed to be renting the house -- were seen burning leaves in the yard. The burning leaves apparently ignited the exterior of the house. Winds at 2:51 p.m. were from the northeast at about 15 mph.

When firefighters arrived they began an aggressive interior attack, but the fire was too intense and too dangerous to continue with the interior attack. Firefighters switched to defensive mode.

The level of response was elevated to a 2nd Alarm, then a 4th Alarm, then a 5th Alarm.

Next, the alarm was elevated to an Inter-divisional Task Force response -- basically the next level after the 5th Alarm is reached.

Firefighters from McHenry County, Lake County and Cook County responded as part of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) pre-determined response agreement to major fires and other major emergencies.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury while responding from a fire station. No other injuries were reported.

The entire roof burned and collapsed Saturday afternoon. Firefighters were still extinguishing hot spots, primarily in the attic, until about 6:30 p.m. The dimensions of luxury mansion was about 50 x 100 square feet. A small brush fire also ignited in the rear yard area, hundreds of feet west of the house.

Rowhouse Basement Fire on North Maple St Near Wood St, Palatine

On Friday, April 17, 2015 at 11:23 p.m., the Palatine Fire Department was called to a report of a basement fire at 145 N. Maple Street in Palatine. The first Palatine Fire Department crews arrived on the scene at 11:27 p.m., and reported smoke showing from the front door of a 3 story townhome. The first fire company entered the building to investigate while others pulled a hose line for fire suppression. An aggressive interior attack was made on the fire in the basement. Other firefighters stretched a supply line to a fire hydrant and pulled a second hose line for fire suppression. Still other firefighters performed search operations throughout the entire 3-story, smoke filled structure for any trapped occupants. Other fire crews laddered the building and provided for emergency medical coverage. Firefighters also entered both adjoining townhomes to check for smoke and fire. The fire was declared under control at 11:38 p.m. Firefighters continued to ventilate smoke and gases and perform salvage and overhaul activities for some time following.

No civilians or firefighters were injured in the fire, which left the townhome uninhabitable and displaced four occupants. Damage estimates are not available at the time of this release, and the fire remains under investigation by Palatine Fire Department investigators.

The fire was fought by 23 firefighters, staffing three engines, two ladder trucks, one rescue squad and three ambulances which responded to the scene along with two command officers and two Fire Investigators. During the incident, an ambulance from Long Grove Fire Protection District stood by in a Palatine fire station to provide coverage for any additional calls. Palatine Police officers assisted at the scene with traffic and crowd control.

The Palatine Fire Department reminds everyone to have working smoke detectors in their homes, whether a single-family dwelling, an apartment or a condo. Have an escape plan, practice it, and be prepared to use it in the event of any fire.

Arlington Heights Can Register to Have Smoke Detectors Checked on April 25

On Saturday, April 25, Arlington Heights residents can have new batteries placed in their home smoke detectors at no cost and faulty detectors replaced through "The Katie Project," a community initiative that started two years ago following a devastating fire that killed three women inside a home on Dunton Avenue where there was an inoperable smoke detector.

The goal of "The Katie Project" is to make fire safety easy and to help ensure that more homes in Arlington Heights have working smoke detectors. This initiative is named after Village Trustee Joe Farwell's cousin who died in a home fire in the 1970s before it was commonplace to have smoke detectors in homes.

If you are interested in having the battery of your smoke detectors checked and replaced by volunteer teams with "The Katie Project" on Saturday, April 25 between 9 a.m. and Noon, please register by emailing your name, address and phone number to nkluz@vah.com or please call the Village Manager's Office at 847-368-5100.

This program benefits residents who do not have the opportunity or ability to check whether their smoke detectors need new batteries. Any Arlington Heights resident, whether living in a home, apartment or condo is eligible to participate in "The Katie Project." The free program will continue until all donated batteries and smoke detectors are used.

Residents are encouraged to check their smoke detectors on a regular basis and to purchase new detectors every 10 years.

Separate Lightning Strikes Suspected in Mount Prospect Apartment Fire and Hainesville House Fire

Mount Prospect police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 3:17 PM Thursday to an apartment fire in the block of 400 East Lincoln Street Mount Prospect, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report of smoke filling an upper floor apartment on Lincoln Street about about 10:49 a.m. Thursday. Mount Prospect firefighters quickly extinguished the fire within about 15 minutes.

Firefighters from Elk Grove Village, Elk Grove Township, Arlington Heights and Des Plaines assisted Mount Prospect for the working fire response.

A resident in the apartment was awakened by a smoke alarm, and reported the fire. The person was checked for smoke inhalation, but was not transported to the hospital by paramedics.

Firefighters suspect lightning caused the fire.

Lightning is also the suspected cause of a fire that was reported about 12:20 p.m. in the 200 block of Big Horn Drive. Grayslake firefighters arrived to find flames showing from about one-quarter of the second-floor front roof line. Flames were at least 10 feet into the air on the right side of the front of the house, over the garage. The fire was upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm for mutual assistance from neighboring fire deparments.

The Hainesville fire was also extinguished in about 15 minutes. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters from Fox Lake, Gurnee, Lake Villa, Libertyville, Mundelein, Round Lake, Wauconda, and Waukegan assisted Grayslake firefighters either at the scene or by providing fire station coverage.

In the Mount Prospect incident, working smoke alarms promptly alerted the occupant of the fire. Fire Chief John Malcolm urges all residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their home and practice their home fire escape plans.

Chief Malcolm said, "Working smoke alarms provide an early warning, especially when you are asleep. If a fire occurs, having a working smoke alarm reduces your risk of dying in a home fire by 50 percent. Testing your smoke alarms monthly and practicing your home fire escape plan is one of the most important aspects of fire prevention in your home."

Mount Prospect Fire Department will assist those residents that are unable to install or test their smoke alarms. For more information regarding smoke alarms or other fire safety questions, please contact the Mount Prospect Fire Prevention Bureau at (847) 818-5253.

Several thunderstorm cells with cloud-to-ground lightning have tracked across northern Illinois since early Thursday morning.
